Lombok's charm, often called "Bali from 20 years ago," lies in its authentic and raw adventure. Instead of crowds, you will find wilder beaches and the epic Mount Rinjani. Discover the simple life on the car-free Gili Islands with sea turtles, and connect with the unique, traditional Sasak culture.

Lombok on the Map: Your First Look at Southwest Indonesia's Paradise Island

Lombok Indonesia Map
Lombok Indonesia Map

So, the first question on everyone's mind is, 'Where exactly is Lombok?' This map gives you the big picture. As you can see, Lombok is located in the south-central part of Indonesia.

The easiest way to find it is to look for the famous island of Bali. Lombok is its immediate neighbor to the east, right across the Lombok Strait.

Lombok Island Map: Lombok at Glance

Now that you know where Lombok is in the grand scheme of things, let's zoom in on the island itself. This map is your "cheat sheet"—a complete overview of Lombok's entire layout.

The Lombok Strait separates Bali and Lombok. This narrow channel is only about 35 kilometers wide at its narrowest point. Yet this strait marks an important boundary. Scientists call it the Wallace Line.

West of this line, wildlife resembles Asian species. East of it, animals show Australian characteristics. And the Alas Strait to the east, separating it from Sumbawa.

A quick, Visual Understanding of Where Everything is on Lombok Island

The Southern Part: The map highlights the south coast as the hub of tourism. Here you'll find the famous Kuta Beach, the main base for exploring world-class surfing spots and the unique culture of the traditional Sasak Villages.

The Southern Croners: n the far southeast, the map pinpoints the remote Pink Beach. In the southwest, it shows the location of the "Secret Gilis," a chain of quieter islands perfect for snorkeling.

The Western of Lombok: The public ferry from Bali arrives at Lembar Harbor in the southwest. The island's capital, Mataram, is located on the central west coast but is not a major tourist stop.

The primary tourist area is further north in Senggigi, which is the top choice for accommodation for new visitors. While Senggigi's port offers transfers, the main departure point for the Gili Islands, especially for public ferries, is Bangsal Port, located even further north.

The Famous Trio: Off the northwest coast, the map clearly marks the world-famous three Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, and Air), the ultimate island escape.

The Mighty North: Dominating the entire northern half of the island is the majestic Mount Rinjani, the volcanic heart of Lombok.

The Undiscovered East: And for the truly adventurous, the map points to the Eastern Gili Islands in the northeast, an off-the-beaten-path destination waiting to be explored.

Airport: In the south-central part of the island, we've marked the Lombok International Airport (LOP), the main entry point for most visitors.

Lombok Tourist Map: A Guide to the Main Tourist Areas & Attractions

Lombok Tourist Map

To build on what we just discussed, here is a Lomnok tourist map that perfectly complements the last section. It gives you an at-a-glance look at both the popular tourist hotspots and the quieter, less-crowded gems.

And don't worry, we'll dive deeper. To help you explore these key areas in more detail, we've prepared 3 close-up maps later in this guide: one for the Kuta Beach area, another for the Gili Islands, and a final one for Mount Rinjani.

Popular Tourist Hotspots (The "Must-Sees"):

  • South Beach Area (Kuta): The vibrant heart of Lombok tourism, famous for its stunning white-sand beaches and world-class surfing.
  • Pink Beach Area: A remote corner in the southeast, known for its unique, pink-hued sand.
  • The Three Gili Islands Area: The world-famous trio of car-free islands off the northwest coast, a paradise for snorkeling, diving, and relaxing.
  • Mount Rinjani Area: The adventurous northern region, dominated by the epic volcano and its surrounding waterfalls.

Less Crowded & Off-the-Beaten-Path Areas:

  • Senggigi Beach & Mataram Area: The classic resort area and the island's capital, offering comfort and convenience.
  • The "Secret" Gili Islands Area: A chain of quiet, pristine islands in the southwest, perfect for snorkeling away from the crowds.
  • The Eastern Gili Islands Area: A truly off-the-grid destination for adventurous travelers looking for untouched islands.
  • Airport & Central South Sasak Village Area: The island's entry point and the cultural heartland of Lombok's indigenous Sasak people.

Kuta Beach Area Map: Lombok's Southern White Sand Paradise

The Kuta Beach area sits on Lombok's southern coast. This region has transformed into the island's beach and surf capital. From Senggigi Beach, the drive takes about 1.5 hours heading southeast.

Best Beaches to Enjoy:

The number one reason most people fall in love with Lombok is its southern coastline. The beaches here are simply on another level—wilder, more dramatic, and less crowded than anywhere in Bali.

  • Kuta Beach, Lombok: This is the main town and hub of the south.
  • Tanjung Aan Beach: This is one of the most iconic beaches. It's a massive bay with two distinct coves. The sand here is unique, like coarse white pepper, and the water is brilliantly turquoise.
  • Mawun Beach: A perfect, crescent-shaped bay surrounded by green hills, located west of Kuta. The water here is calm and deep, making it arguably the best swimming beach in the south.
  • Seger Beach, just 2 kilometers west of Kuta, offers a more local feel. Fishermen still launch their boats from this beach. A nearby hill provides panoramic views of multiple bays. This spot is perfect for sunset photography.

Surfing in the Kuta Area

Surfing in the Kuta Area attracts wave riders of all levels. Kuta Beach itself offers beach breaks suitable for beginners to intermediates. Multiple peaks spread along the beach so you can usually find space. Waves range from 2 to 5 feet most days.

Surfing spot Best for Features
Selong Belanak Beach Beginners The sandy bottom and gentle, consistent waves make it a safe and fun place to stand up on a board for the first time.
Gerupuk Bay Intermediate Surfers The area's surf mecca. The bay contains several world-class reef breaks.
Mawi Advanced Surfers Mawi is a more powerful and challenging wave, known for its fast barrels when the swell is right.
Desert Point For Pros Located on the remote southwest tip of Lombok, this is a legendary, world-class wave known for its incredibly long, perfect barrels.

A trip to Lombok isn't complete without visiting the famous Gili Islands. Offering some of the best snorkeling in the region, these three world-renowned, car-free islands are a must-see, and island hopping between them is an adventure in itself.

Each island has its own unique personality: Gili Trawangan (or Gili T) is the vibrant hub for parties and socializing; Gili Meno is the quiet, romantic escape perfect for honeymooners; and Gili Air strikes a beautiful balance between a laid-back vibe and fantastic amenities.

Mount Rinjani Area Map: Trekking Indonesia's Sacred Volcano

Mount Rinjani Area Map
Mount Rinjani Area Map

Mount Rinjani is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and the crown jewel of Lombok. This map is your guide to adventure. It focuses on the majestic Mount Rinjani (3,726 meters).

The Mount Rinjani map details the two primary trekking routes: the trail from Senaru, which typically leads to the crater rim on a 2-day/1-night trek, and the more challenging trail from Sembalun, which is the starting point for reaching the true summit on a 3-day/2-night expedition.

  • From Senaru (North): This is the most common route to reach the crater rim. The classic 2-day, 1-night trek starts here, taking you up to the Senaru Crater Rim for spectacular views of the crater lake, Segara Anak.
  • From Sembalun (East): This route is used for treks that go to the true summit. The popular 3-day, 2-night trek usually starts here, summits on the second morning, and descends via Senaru.

Nearby Waterfalls: Even if you don't trek the volcano, you must visit the waterfalls near the base in Senaru. This map shows the location of:

  • Sendang Gile Waterfall: An easily accessible, beautiful two-tiered waterfall.
  • Tiu Kelep Waterfall: A more spectacular and powerful waterfall, requiring a 20-minute jungle trek from Sendang Gile. You can swim in the pool at its base.

Lombok Accommodation Map: Best Accommodation Area on Lombok Island

Lombok Accommodation Map
Lombok Accommodation Map

Finding the right place to stay and eat is crucial. This map gives you a clear overview of the best areas for accommodation and some must-try food experiences, broken down by region.

For accommodation, your choice depends on your focus. Beach lovers should look at the south coast. Kuta Lombok offers the widest range of options. Budget hostels, mid-range hotels, and a few upscale resorts line the beach and nearby roads.

Senggigi in the northwest provides another accommodation hub. This area has been developed longer. You'll find established hotels and resorts. The beachfront stretches for kilometers with many properties facing the water.

For Mount Rinjani treks, you'll stay in Senaru or Sembalun before and after. Both villages offer simple guesthouses. Don't expect luxury. These are mountain villages with basic facilities. But the hospitality is warm and prices are low.

Mataram and the surrounding cities have hotels catering to business travelers and those with early flights. Unless you have specific needs, most tourists skip staying here.
