Komodo Island on Map: Map of Komodo Island to Understanding Your Destination

Komodo Island on Map

First things first, let's figure out exactly where we're going. Looking at Komodo on a Indonesia map does something important.

Indonesia is a massive country made of thousands of islands. If you find Bali, a place many people know. Komodo sits about 200 miles east of Bali. It's not a huge island. Komodo Island itself covers about 150 square miles.

Tucked in that chain, between the larger islands of Sumbawa and Flores, is our destination: Komodo.

Before we dive into more exciting details, let's clear up the biggest myth about Komodo. Many people think "Komodo" is a single island, just like Bali. But the truth is, it's so much more than that.

When people talk about visiting Komodo, they are usually referring to a whole group of islands, which includes the famous Komodo Island itself. This incredible place is officially known as Komodo National Park.

The park was founded in 1980 to protect the world-famous Komodo dragon. It covers about 700 square miles of both land and sea and is a sanctuary for three main islands: Komodo, Rinca, and Padar, as well as many smaller islands and the rich marine waters surrounding them.

Komodo Island: The Largest and Most Famous

Located in the western part of the park, Komodo is the largest and most well-known of the islands. This is where you will find the biggest population of Komodo dragons. The island's landscape is made up of rugged hills and dry savannas.

Rinca Island (Pronounced 'Rin-cha')

Rinca Island is located to the east. It's a bit smaller than Komodo but is also home to many dragons. Some visitors prefer Rinca because it often feels less crowded and is closer to the main town of Labuan Bajo.

Padar Island: The supermodel of the park

Padar Island sits between the two. It's uninhabited now but offers the most famous viewpoint in the entire park. It's home to one of the most breathtaking panoramic scenes in all of Indonesia. After a short hike, you'll see a famous view of three beautiful beaches, each with different colored sand.

The Marine Areas: Ideal for Snorkeling and Diving

The marine areas matter just as much. The waters around these islands are rich with life. Coral reefs thrive here. The currents bring nutrients that feed thousands of species. These waters are why snorkeling and diving are so spectacular.

Komodo Activity Map: Dragons, Pink Beach & Every Stop You Can't Miss

An activity map layers all the incredible experiences on top of the park map we just looked at.

See Komodo Dragons (Komodo Island and Rinca Island)

This is the big one! These giant lizards grow up to 10 feet long. They're the world's largest living lizard. While Komodo dragons technically live on a few islands in the park (including smaller ones like Gili Motang and Nusa Kode not on tourist routes).

Your activity map will point you to the two primary and most reliable locations for sightings: Komodo Island and Rinca Island. On both islands, you must join a guided trek with an expert local ranger who will keep you safe.

  • On Komodo Island, the main viewing area is near the ranger station. Rangers lead guided walks. The walks range from easy to challenging.
  • Since Rinca Island is smaller, its dragon population is more concentrated, which often makes them much easier to spot.

The terrain is also a bit flatter, and the dragons can frequently be seen relaxing near the ranger station. Because of this, some visitors feel that Rinca offers a better overall experience.

Enjoy the World-Famous Pink Beach

Your map will show a spot called Long Beach (Pink Beach) on Padar Island—this is the most famous and visited Pink Beach. Its unique color comes from tiny red organisms on the coral, which mix with the white sand.

However, there is another popular "Pink Beach" on Komodo Island itself that many day trips visit.

Hike for the Iconic Padar Island View

Padar Island delivers the most photographed view in Komodo National Park. You've probably seen this image online. Three crescent bays curve around hills. Each bay has different colored sand.

At the top, you'll understand why people travel thousands of miles for this view. The bays spread out below you. The colors shift from turquoise to deep blue. Hills fold into each other. It's nature's masterpiece. Go early morning or late afternoon.

Snorkel in Crystal Clear Waters

The waters of Komodo are a snorkeler's paradise and just as famous as the islands themselves. Your map will be dotted with world-class spots. Here are a few top ones:

Siaba Besar (Turtle Town): As the name suggests, this is one of the best places in the park to swim with beautiful green sea turtles.

Kelor Island: Perfect for everyone. It has a beautiful beach, calm waters for snorkeling, and a short, steep hill you can climb for a fantastic view.

Manjarite: Known for its long wooden jetty that stretches over incredibly clear, calm water. It's like snorkeling in a natural swimming pool filled with colorful fish.

Taka Makassar: This isn't really an island, but a tiny, crescent-shaped sandbar in the middle of Turquoise water. Snorkeling around its edges is a surreal experience.

Kanawa Island sits northeast of Labuan Bajo. It's outside the main park but often included in tours. The snorkeling here is gentle. Perfect for families or beginners.

For Divers: If you are a certified diver, Komodo is a top-tier destination. Famous dive sites like Batu Bolong and Castle Rock have incredibly strong currents but offer some of the most vibrant marine life on the planet.

Swim with Majestic Manta Rays

Manta Point sits in the channel between Komodo and Rinca. This is one of the best places on Earth to see manta rays. These gentle giants glide through the water. Their wingspan can reach 15 feet.

The mantas come here to feed and be cleaned. You can snorkel or dive here. Seeing these creatures up close is magical. They move with such grace. The currents at Manta Point can be strong. You need reasonable swimming ability.

Watch the Sunset Bat Migration

Kalong Island offers a unique wildlife experience. Thousands of flying foxes live here. These large bats spend their days sleeping in the trees. At sunset, they wake up. Then they fly out to feed.

First a few bats take flight. Then dozens. Then hundreds. Soon the sky fills with thousands of flying foxes. They stream overhead in long ribbons. The sight is mesmerizing.

Komodo Tour Itinerary Maps: 3 Maps to Help Your Island Hopping Tour Planning

When you study the park map, notice the distances. The islands sit close together. Most are just one to two hours apart by boat. This proximity makes island hopping practical. You can visit multiple islands in one day.

The next question is: "How do I get there?" This is where our Transportation Map comes in.

It makes it clear that you can't fly directly to see the dragons from another country. You need to take a smaller, local flight. For almost every international traveler, the journey looks like this:

First, fly into a major Indonesian airport. The most popular choice is Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Jakarta (CGK) is another option.

Next, take a domestic flight to Labuan Bajo (LBJ). Labuan Bajo is a small town that is the gateway to Komodo National Park. The flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo is short and beautiful, usually taking about one hour.
