How to Plan a 2-Week Trip to Indonesia (Don't Skip This!)

This is the most important section for a first-time visitor. Indonesia is geographically massive, and understanding the "how" is critical before you get to the "what." These are the non-negotiable realities of planning a trip that flows smoothly.
How to Get Between Islands (Flights vs. Ferries)
For this 14-day itinerary, you will need to book at least three domestic flights: Yogyakarta (JOG) to Bali (DPS), Bali (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ), and Labuan Bajo (LBJ) back to Bali or Jakarta for your departure.
Best Time to Visit (Dry Season vs. Wet Season)
Indonesia has two seasons: dry (roughly April to October) and wet (roughly November to March). For this specific itinerary, I strongly recommend targeting the dry season.
The dry season means calmer waters, clearer snorkeling, and more pleasant, less humid days for temple exploration.
Visa, Money & SIM Cards (Latest Update)
Most nationalities can get a Visa on Arrival (VoA), which you can now conveniently purchase online before your trip as an "e-VoA." This saves you a significant amount of time in the immigration queue.
The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). The best way to get cash is by using ATMs, which are widely available. I find the ones at convenience stores like Circle K or Indomaret to be reliable.
For connectivity, I recommend purchasing an e-SIM before you land. Finally, download the Gojek and Grab apps. In Indonesia, these are your lifeline—they are used for everything from ride-hailing and scooter taxis to ordering food delivery from tiny local warungs (eateries).
The Ultimate 2-Week Indonesia Itinerary: Temples, Dragons & Beaches
Now for the fun part. This day-by-day guide is structured to be fast-paced but incredibly rewarding, giving you a taste of three distinct and magical parts of the country.
Days 1-2: Jakarta, West Java (Arrival & Old World Charm)

On Day 1, your only goal is to arrive at Soekarno-Hatta Airport (CGK), and get to your hotel.
On Day 2, you'll explore two different worlds. In the morning, step back in time in Kota Tua, the historical heart of old Dutch Batavia, with its charming colonial square.
From there, visit the magnificent Istiqlal Mosque, the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, and then walk directly across the street to the towering Jakarta Cathedral. Seeing these two powerful symbols side-by-side is a profound introduction to Indonesia's "unity in diversity."
My pro-tip: stay in a hotel near Gambir Station to make your morning train on Day 3 completely effortless.

Days 3-4: Yogyakarta, Central Java (Ancient Wonders)

On Day 3, you'll take that 7-hour scenic executive train from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, the undisputed cultural heart of Java. Check into your hotel in the Prawirotaman area—my preferred neighborhood for its great cafes and guesthouses.
Day 4 is the big one, and it's an early start. You'll wake at 3:30 AM for the journey to Borobudur, the world's largest Buddhist temple.
Watching the sun rise over the surrounding volcanoes and light up the 72 bell-shaped stupas is a truly spiritual, life-changing experience.
In the afternoon, you'll visit Prambanan, a stunning complex of sharp, soaring Hindu temples from the 9th century.
In the evening, explore the Kraton Palace, the still-active residence of the Sultan, and the nearby Taman Sari Water Castle, the former royal garden and bathing complex.

Days 5-6: Mount Bromo, East Java (The Volcanic Heart)

Day 5 is the most complex travel day of the trip. You'll take the morning train from Yogyakarta to Surabaya.
Your tour driver will meet you at Surabaya station and drive you 3-4 hours up the mountains to the small village of Cemoro Lawang, which is perched on the edge of the ancient caldera.
On Day 6, you'll have a 3 AM jeep ride to Penanjakan Peak for a sunrise you will never forget, watching the light hit Mount Bromo and the surrounding volcanic landscape. After sunrise, you'll drive across the alien-like Sea of Sand and hike to the crater's smoking rim.
Your driver will then take you back to Surabaya.

Day 7-8: Flight to Bali & The Ubud Explore

On Day 7, you'll take that 1-hour flight from Surabaya (SUB) to Denpasar, Bali (DPS). You're heading straight to Ubud, the spiritual and artistic center of the island (about a 90-minute drive).
On Day 8, Spend your morning exploring the heart of Ubud. Start at the Sacred Monkey Forest, a lush, temple-filled sanctuary where hundreds of long-tailed macaques roam freely.
From there, walk to the Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung), the historic residence of Ubud's royal family, and wander through the vibrant Ubud Art Market across the street.
In the afternoon, hire a driver and head to the coast for sunset at Tanah Lot Temple, a stunning Hindu shrine perched on a rock in the ocean, famous for its dramatic sunset silhouette.
Ubud (Bali) Hotels & Villas: For a classic Ubud experience, I recommend finding a small hotel or private villa that overlooks the rice paddies or a jungle ravine, just outside the busy town center. This provides the peace and tranquility that Ubud is famous for.
Day 9: The Cliffs of Uluwatu

Today you'll transfer hotels, moving from the jungles of Ubud to the dramatic cliffs of the Uluwatu area.
Spend the day exploring postcard-perfect beaches like Padang Padang. In the evening, head to Uluwatu Temple, another of Bali's key sea temples, which is perched on a sheer 70-meter cliff high above the Indian Ocean.
Arrive before 6 PM to get a ticket for the Kecak Fire Dance, a mesmerizing performance where a choir of over 100 men tells a Hindu epic using only their voices as the sun sets on fire behind them. It's touristy, but it is absolutely unmissable.
Days 10-11: Sanur & The Nusa Penida

Transfer to the coastal town of Sanur for a free day (Day 10). We base ourselves in Sanur for a strategic reason: it's the main port for the fast boats to Nusa Penida, making Day 11 seamless. It's also a calm, relaxing base before your final adventure.
On Day 11, you'll take an early fast boat for the Nusa Penida West Coast Tour. This is a rugged, adventurous day trip to an island famous for its raw, natural beauty. You'll see Kelingking Beach (the famous "T-Rex" cliff), Angel's Billabong (a natural tidal pool), and Broken Beach.
Day 12-14: Komodo National Park

Day 12: Flight to Komodo (Labuan Bajo).
Day 13: The Komodo Island Hopping Tour.
You'll join a full-day, 10-12 hour speedboat tour that serves as the grand finale of your Indonesia's epic. The classic route is a whirlwind of icons:
- You'll start with the pre-dawn hike on Padar Island to get that famous viewpoint of its tri-colored beaches. From there, you'll swim at the surreal Pink Beach.
- The main event, of course, is landing on Komodo Island to see the world's largest lizards, the Komodo dragons, in their natural habitat (always with a trained ranger).
- You'll then snorkel at Taka Makassar, a tiny, perfect sandbar in the middle of turquoise water, and search for gentle giants at Manta Point.
Day 14: Departure
Labuan Bajo (Flores) Hotels: Accommodations in Labuan Bajo are more functional than luxurious, as most people are only there before or after their boat trip. The best options are the larger hotels on the hill, which offer incredible sunset views over the harbor and the islands you just explored.

2 Weeks in Indonesia Budget

Indonesia can be famously affordable or incredibly luxurious, with very little in between. A backpacker might get by on $30 USD/day, while a high-end luxury traveler could spend $1,000.
For this mid-range itinerary, a comfortable budget is around $100-$150 USD per person, per day. This covers nice (but not extravagant) hotels, domestic flights, all tours (including the Komodo trip), and all your food.
