Quick Q&A about 10 Days in Kyrgyzstan

Q1: Is 10 days enough for Kyrgyzstan?
Yes! It is the perfect amount of time to circle the Issyk-Kul Lake and reach the remote southern mountain passes in Naryn.
Q2: Can you get a taxi to Tash Rabat and Song-Kul Lake?
Not easily. These roads are rough and unpaved. It is much safer to hire a dedicated 4x4 with a driver or travel with a local tour agency like Asia Odyssey Travel.
Q3: Where to experience a horse riding?
Song-Kul is the best choice. The wide, flat pastures make it easy and safe for beginners to ride with nomads.
Q4: Is the altitude at Song-Kul and Tash Rabat an issue?
You will be at 3,000m+. Drink plenty of water and move slowly. Our route builds up height gradually to help you.
We start at 800m in Bishkek and then move to 1,600m around Issyk-Kul Lake. Only after your body has adjusted do you head to the high altitudes of 3,000m+ at Tash Rabat and Song-Kul.
Q5: How much cash should I carry for 10 days?
Carry about $250 USD in Kyrgyz Som. Most mountain camps don't take cards, and ATMs are only in big cities like Bishkek.
Where to Spend 10 Days in Kyrgyzstan?

With 10 days in Kyrgyzstan, you don't need to pick between the classic Issyk-Kul loop in the east or the ancient Silk Road route in the south. You can do both!
Our Kyrgyzstan 10-day itinerary lets you leave the busy "tourist loop" behind. You will enter the true nomad heartland where the mountains are taller and the stars are brighter.
Note: For those who only have 7 days or 5 days in Kyrgyzstan, we've also travel plans for you!

Now, let's break down the 10-day Kyrgyzstan itinerary day-by-day!
Days 1-2: Bishkek City Pulse & Alpine Prep
Your epic Kyrgyzstan 10-day itinerary begins in our capital – Bishkek, about 800m. After we pick you up from the airport, take some time to breathe the mountain air.
On Day 2, we'll walk through Ala-Too Square and get lost in the colors of Osh Bazaar.
For a grand finale to your city stay, we'll drive to Ala-Archa National Park. It's a spectacular canyon with snowy peaks that makes for the perfect "warm-up" hike for the days ahead.

Day 3: Burana Tower - The Gateway to Issyk-Kul Lake
We leave the city for the 1,600m shores of the "Blue Pearl" on Day 3. Our first stop is the Burana Tower, an 11th-century minaret that stood on the Silk Road.
It's a great place to stretch your legs before we reach Cholpon-Ata on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul Lake. The water here is so clear you can see the mountain reflections perfectly.

Day 4: Gorges & Glyphs - Petroglyphs Museum, Grigoriev & Semenov Gorges
On Day 4, we leave the beaches of Cholpon-Ata and head toward the mountain hub of Karakol.
My favorite stop today is the Grigoriev and Semienov Gorges. These "twin" valleys are lush, green, and perfect for a picnic.
You'll also get to explore the Petroglyphs Museum, an open-air field of stones carved by ancient hands thousands of years ago.
By evening, we'll reach Karakol, a town famous for its mix of Russian, Dungan, and Kyrgyz cultures.

Day 5: The Spiritual Hub - Karakol
Day 5 is all about the soul of the Karakol region.
We'll visit the wooden Dungan Mosque, which looks like a Buddhist temple but serves as a center for local Muslims, and the Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral.
After a morning of culture, we drive to the Jeti-Oguz Gorge. You'll see the famous "Seven Bulls" and "Broken Heart" red rocks.
Finally, we'll spend the night in the quiet village of Tamga on the lake's southern shore.

Day 6: The Southern Heritage Trail (Tamga - Skazka Canyon - Bokonbayevo - Kyzyl Tuu - Kochkor)
Day 6 is a big one for your Kyrgyzstan 10-day itinerary!
We start at Skazka (Fairytale) Canyon, where the red rocks look like frozen dragons. Then, we meet a local Eagle Hunter in Bokonbayevo to see an ancient hunting tradition.
Next, we visit Kyzyl-Tuu, the "Yurt Village of the World." Almost every yurt in Kyrgyzstan is born here! We'll end the day in Kochkor, the best place to learn traditional felt-making.

Day 7: The Silk Road Fortress - Tash Rabat
On Day 7, we leave the lake behind and drive deep into the Naryn region.
We are heading for Tash Rabat, a 15th-century stone "hotel" for Silk Road merchants. It's tucked away in a hidden valley near the Chinese border.
Walking through its dark stone domes, you can almost hear the camel caravans from hundreds of years ago.
Tonight, you'll sleep in a yurt camp right next to history.
Day 8: Into the Clouds - Song-Kul Lake
Day 8 takes us to the high-altitude heart of the country: Song-Kul Lake!
At 3,000 meters, there are no trees and no houses—only yurts and thousands of free-roaming horses. It is the most peaceful place in the world!
You can take a long walk along the shore or hop on a horse to explore the summer pastures. The sunset here, reflecting off the water, is something you will never forget.

Day 9: Our Last Mountain Sunrise & The Long Descent
On Day 9, we wake up early to see the mist rise over the lake. After a final nomad breakfast, we begin the long drive back to Bishkek.
We'll cross the Kalmak-Ashu Pass at 3,440 meters—the highest point of your 10 days in Kyrgyzstan. The road winds through the dramatic Boom Gorge before we reach the city lights of the capital once more.
Day 10: Bishkek Departure
Day 10 is for final goodbyes.
We'll help you pick up some local honey or felt slippers at the market before taking you to the airport. You'll head home with a camera full of mountains and a heart full of nomad spirit!
Why a 4x4 Is Mandatory for this Kyrgyzstan 10-Day Itinerary?

For this Kyrgyzstan 10-day itinerary, a 4x4 is not just for style—it is for safety!
The paths to Tash Rabat and Song-Kul are INTENSE. Once you head south, you leave the pavement behind for gravel, mud, and steep mountain passes. A regular car cannot handle the "washboard" roads.
You need a high-clearance 4x4 SUV to stay safe and comfortable!
At Asia Odyssey Travel, we use sturdy Toyota Land Cruisers or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans. All work perfectly on these rocky paths.
More importantly, you need a skilled local driver. Our drivers know every turn of the 3,300-meter passes. They know how to handle the "mountain massage" so you can relax and enjoy the view!
Best Time to Go Yurt Camping or Horse Riding for 10 Days in Kyrgyzstan

The mountains have their own clock! If you want to experience the true nomad life at Song-Kul or Tash Rabat, you have to time it right.
✔ June to August: This is the "Golden Window." All yurt camps are open, the pastures are green, and it is the perfect time for horse riding.
✔ Late May or September: The quiet "Shoulder Season." It's beautiful but chilly—be ready for cold nights in the yurts!

What & Where to Eat During 10 Days in Kyrgyzstan?

Eating in Kyrgyzstan is a journey of its own. In the cities, you'll find a mix of Russian, Chinese, and Central Asian flavors. In the mountains, it's all about the "Nomad Fuel"—hearty meat, fresh bread, and rich dairy.
To help you map out your meals, here are the must-try dishes based on the stops in our 10-day Kyrgyzstan itinerary:
| Destination | Must-Try Dish | Why It's Special |
|---|---|---|
| Bishkek | Beshbarmak | Our national dish! Literally "five fingers" because you traditionally eat these flat noodles and slow-cooked meat by hand. |
| Karakol | Ashlan-Fu | A cold, spicy, and tangy noodle soup. It's the pride of Karakol and the ultimate refresher after a mountain hike. |
| Bokonbayevo | Goshnan | A juicy meat-filled flatbread. It's like a nomad's take on a meat pie, perfect for lunch in a lakeside yurt. |
| Kochkor | Dimlama | A slow-cooked stew of meat, potatoes, cabbage, and carrots. It's "comfort in a bowl" after a day of felt-making. |
| Tash Rabat | Tash-Kordo | An ancient recipe where meat is marinated and slow-cooked over hot stones—just like the Silk Road merchants ate! |
| Song-Kul | Kaymak & Nan | Thick, fresh mountain cream spread on warm tandoor bread. There is no better breakfast as the sun rises over the lake. |
