Tianjin Tours: A Glimpse Into China's Past 100 Years

Tianjin has a great location: it serves as Beijing's gateway to the Bohai Sea (Emperor's Port)! A mere 30-minute high-speed train links you with Beijing, the capital of China! Serving as the largest port in North China, it is perfect for international cruise ship travelers (Tianjin Shore Excursion). You can make easy side trip to Beijing from Tianjin.

Besides, Tianjin, one of the four municipalities along with Beijing, Shanghai, and Chongqing, has its unique charm (atmosphere similar to Shanghai’s Bund)! It boasts colonial architecture, laid-back charm, Tianjin food (contrast from the imperial grandeur of Beijing)!

Tianjin Tours Highlights & Best Experience:

It is a good idea to spend 1-2 days in Tianjin. Our Tianjin Tour offers a window into China's last century of history through sites like the Tianjin Museum and the Five Great Avenues (European-style architecture, reminiscent of Shanghai's Bund). You can stroll among over 2,000 colonial-era buildings, each whispering tales of their past owners (such as the Last Emperor Puyi's Jing Garden and Commander Zhang's Mansion).

Besides the colonial architecture, marvel at the iconic Tianjin Eye, wander along the Haihe River, and try foods like Goubuli Steamed Buns, Erduoyan Crispy Fried Twists, and Tianjin Style Pancakes.

Plan Your Tianjin Tour by Your Interests:

1. Classic Tianjin Tour (1-2 Days) For cruise travellers' pre- & post-trips, our Tianjin Layover Tour from Tianjin Port is a good choice for Tianjin Shore excursions. For first-timers, foodies, or history buffs, choose our 2-day tour that includes the best of Tianjin.

    1. Best "wow" photo op in Tianjin?
    icon
    Three shots define Tianjin:
Porcelain House: 7 billion ceramic shards shimmering at sunset (¥50 entry).
Jin Tower Observatory: 336m high with glass floors framing Haihe’s dragon-curve (¥80).
Tianjin Eye: Ferris wheel straddling a river bridge – shoot from King’s Joy Hotel rooftop bar.

  • icon
    2. What are Tianjin's must-visit attractions?
    icon
Tianjin boasts a rich blend of historical and modern attractions. Highlights include the Tianjin Eye (a giant Ferris wheel offering panoramic views), the Ancient Culture Street (a bustling market showcasing traditional Chinese architecture and crafts), and the Five Great Avenues (a collection of Western-style mansions from the early 20th century). For nature lovers, the Haihe River and the Binhai Library (a stunning architectural marvel) are also worth a visit.

  • icon
    3. What are the must-try local foods in Tianjin?
    icon
Oh, the food is a highlight! Tianjin cuisine is renowned for its fresh seafood, delicate flavors, and diverse influences. You simply cannot leave without trying Goubuli Baozi (steamed buns), a national icon. But I'd also highly recommend Jianbing Guozi (savory crepes) for breakfast, the unique flavors of Guobacai (savory pancake soup), Mahua (deep-fried dough sticks), and the sweet delight of Erduoyan Fried Cakes. Tianjin offers a distinct culinary identity.

    4. What makes Tianjin unique vs. Beijing/Shanghai?
    icon
Tianjin is China’s ‘stealth superstar’ – colonial Europe meets river-port soul. Tianjin offers a unique blend of colonial charm, coastal vibrancy, and grassroots humor unmatched elsewhere. Unlike Beijing’s imperial grandeur or Shanghai’s global buzz, Tianjin thrives on its "melting pot" identity & offer:
1.Architecture Whispers: 2,000+ preserved European villas (Five Great Avenues) beside Ming-era temples.
2.Haihe River Romance: Night cruises under 12 illuminated bridges – our "Venice of the East" moment.
3.CrossTalk Comedy and Culture: Catch live xiangsheng (comedic dialogue) at Tea Houses – a dying art thriving here! Humorous locals, Pingju Opera, and a "laid-back northerner" vibe.
4.Cuisine: Street food heaven - Goubuli buns, 18th Street fried twists, and jianbing guozi (savory crepes).

  • icon
    5. How long should travelers stay to experience Tianjin fully?
    icon
Tianjin is a city of contrasts, where ancient traditions dance with modernity, and every corner tells a story. Whether you’re a history buff, foodie, or family traveler, it offers a tapestry of experiences that’s uniquely its own. So take 3–4 days for a comprehensive trip:
Day 1: Historic core (Five Great Avenues, Italian Style Street, Ancient Culture Street).
Day 2: Coastal highlights (Tianjin Eye, Haihe River cruise, Binhai New Area).
Day 3: Day trip to the Huangyaguan Great Wall & Dule Temple.
Day 4: Optional deep dive into museums (Tianjin Museum, Natural History Museum) or workshops (clay figurine-making).

  • icon
    6. Is Tianjin a good destination for family travel?
    icon
Absolutely! Tianjin offers a variety of family-friendly attractions, such as the Tianjin Zoo, the Happy Valley Theme Park, and the Binhai Aircraft Carrier Theme Park. The city also has numerous parks and green spaces, perfect for picnics and outdoor activities.

  • icon
    7. What's the best time to visit Tianjin?
    icon
The best times to visit Tianjin are spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild and pleasant. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter can be cold, but the city's winter festivals and ice sculptures add a unique charm.

  • icon
    8. How can I experience Tianjin's local life?
    icon
To truly immerse yourself in Tianjin's local culture, I recommend visiting a traditional teahouse to enjoy a performance of Xiangsheng (a form of Chinese comic dialogue).
Stroll through the local markets to sample street food, and interacting with friendly locals in parks and community centers.
Breakfast like a Tianjin: Join locals queueing for jianbing (savory crepes) at Nanshi Food Street.
Master folding goubuli buns (18 precise pleats!) in a cooking class.
Sip tea with retirees flying kites at Haihe Park.
Hunt Yangliuqing New Year paintings & "Clay Zhang" figurines (UNESCO crafts).
Aperitivo under arcades at Free Path, where Fellini-esque staircases host jazz nights.

  • icon
    9. What kind of architectural experiences can we expect in Tianjin?
    icon
Tianjin is an architectural treasure trove! The Five Great Avenues immerse you in diverse European styles from the concessions era – British, French, Italian, and German. The Italian Style Street is the only one of its kind outside Italy, offering a charming, relaxed atmosphere. And then there's the truly unique Porcelain House, a colonial villa covered entirely in ancient Chinese porcelain – it's a visual spectacle.

  • icon
    10. Biggest misconception about Tianjin?
    icon
    "That we’re just ‘Beijing’s port’!
    Truth: Tianjin birthed China’s first:
    Railway (1888)
    Modern university (Tianjin University, 1895)
    Commercial radio station (1927)
Come for the history, stay for the xiaoye (midnight snacks) culture!

  • icon
    11. Is Tianjin worth visiting for a short trip, like a layover or a day trip from Beijing?
    icon
Absolutely! Tianjin is perfectly suited for a short, impactful visit. With high-speed rail connections from Beijing taking as little as 30 minutes, you can easily cover our key highlights like the Five Great Avenues, Porcelain House, and Ancient Culture Street in a single day, or two days for a more relaxed pace and a visit to the Great Wall.

Huangshan Landscapes and History

Asia Odyssey Travel was the first company to reply to my inquiry regarding a private 4 day tour to Huangshan.  My wife and I were travelling to Chongqing and Chengdu with friends for 7 days and wanted to extend our time in China to see the famed Yellow Mountains.

I contacted AOT with a short list of places we wanted to visit, and Catherine Wang at AOT responded with an itinerary and price quote.  After a little back and forth and a few tweaks, we were ready to go. I'm glad that we were able to upgrade our hotels in Huangshan City (Crowne Plaza) and on the mountain (Baiyun).

Our local guide, Gary, was knowledgeable about the history, culture, resources, economy, and everything else a tourist might ask about the places he showed us.  He paced our hikes on the mountain to our ability and despite rain, showed us breathtaking landscapes.  In the ancient villages of Xidi and Hongcun, we got a feel for life in the Ming and Qing dynasties and independent time to wander the back alleys where life continues in present day.

To sum up, AOT gave us a great experience from planning to pick up and departure.

We booked a tour with Asia Odyssey

We booked a tour with Asia Odyssey to Xian from 21st April to 27th April 2025. Our domestic flight from Guangzhou to Xian was cancelled a few times due to weather issues and it was a relief to us that our tour guide Lucky and our driver Mr Wang were there waiting for us. All of our tour guides and driver helped make our travel experience a smooth and memorable one. They were all very professional and personal at the same time. The guides explained each site well and were always mindful of our energy level during our travel journey. We were especially thankful to our driver, Mr Wang who was with us for the duration of our visit in Xian. Even though he could not communicate too well in English, we could tell how kind and professional he was. He always asked us if we needed snacks and made sure each of us had bottled water at every tourist stop. He really took great care of us, always so gracious and patient with our family members. Service with a Smile! There were times when we travelling without a guide, Mr Wang always gave us the assurance that he would be there waiting for us upon our return. On our return to Malaysia, Mr Wang took us to the luggage department so we could  leave our bags there while we visited the Airport Museum.  He even checked with the airport staff on our behalf regarding our check- in details. Last but not least, a big "Thank you" to our travel consultant, Catherine Wang who so patiently and professionally tailored this tour to suit us.
