Qin Shiuang was the owner of the Terracotta Army, but he definitely did not make those terracotta warriors and horses on his own. Hundreds of ancient potters were the creators of the underground army. They were the most skillful experienced potters at that time.

In order to make high-quality terracotta products, Qin Shihuang asked all the potters to print or carve their own names on their products. If they did a bad job, they would lose their lives. Based on the words on terracotta soldiers and horses, the potter can be divided into government potters and normal potters.

Government Potters’ Products

The government potters would print or carve their names and another Chinese phrases which mean ”official” on their products. These characters were usually printed or carved on the hem of the terracotta soldiers’ clothes or the terracotta soldiers’ legs. It is interesting to see that the government potters only make terracotta soldiers, but no horses. Perhaps, it is because the human beings were more honorable than horses, and government officials could only make honorable products.

Currently, there are 75 pieces of terracotta soldiers with their creators’ names printed, and 12 ones with their creators’ names carved.

Normal Potters

The normal potters were called up by Qin Shihuang from other parts of his Qin State. Most of them were from Xianyang, the capital of Qin State. So far archaeologists have earthed terracotta warriors and horses made by normal potters, who were from four places.

Different from government potters, the normal potters only carved their names, rather than print their names on their products. Archaeologists has found 19 different normal potters’ names on those terracotta soldiers. The normal potters’ hometowns are also carved beside their names.

Generally speaking, the government potters’ products were stronger than the normal potters. This reflects the difference of quality of lives between normal people and government officials at that time.

Were the Potters Killed after Finishing the Terracotta Army?

As we know, Qin Shihuang was a cruel emperor. His army often killed all the enemy even if they surrounded. So, in order to keep the position of the Terracotta Army unknown to others, Qin Shihuang might also kill all potters who created the army.

Actually, archaeologists did find some bones which belonged to human beings in the vaults of Terracotta Army. However, they declared there were less than five people killed based on the amounts of the bones. So, we can know that most potters were not killed, at least, were not killed in the vaults. These victims might be the people who transported those terracotta soldiers or horses, or other funeral objects to the vaults. Their identities remain unclear. Perhaps, they were the captives.

Are Real People in the Terracotta Soldiers?

When the Terracotta Army was discovered accidentally in 1974, some local villagers said the terracotta soldiers were real soldiers who were wrapped with loess. These soldiers were captured by Qin Shihuang’s army during wars.

At the beginning, nobody was serious about this rumor. However, rumors always went faster than the truth. Furthermore, the rumors were “upgraded” during spread. Some people even said the terracotta soldiers were still alive they were unearthed. The government could not keep silent anymore. They sent scientists to do the chemical examination for the terracotta soldiers. And very soon, scientists confirmed that the rumors were totally baseless.
