Location Map of Shangri-La China: Where Is Shangri-La in China?

Location Map of Shangri-La China
Location Map of Shangri-La China

If you look at the Location Map of Shangri-La China, you'll find us tucked away in the northwestern corner of Yunnan, right where the clouds seem to touch the earth.

Specifically, we are at about 27.8° N latitude and 99.7° E longitude. We sit on the southeastern edge of the massive Tibetan Plateau, which explains why the air feels so crisp and thin.

The elevation here is no joke! The city center sits at about 3,160 meters (10,367 feet) above sea level.

It's a place of dramatic borders, neighbored by Tibet to the northwest and Sichuan to the northeast.

Because of this unique spot on the Shangri-La China Map, you get a beautiful mix of Tibetan culture and Yunnan's famous biodiversity.

Tourist Map of Shangri-La China

When you open a Tourist Map of Shangri-La China, you'll see that Shangri-La's attractions are a blend of "Sacred" and "Natural."

You can expect sprawling gilded monasteries, alpine lakes that look like mirrors, and some of the deepest river canyons on the planet.

Here is the breakdown by region:

The City Center

Just a short 20-minute drive away is the Songzanlin Monastery (噶丹松赞林寺), often called the "Little Potala Palace."

If you want a quick nature fix, Napahai Lake (纳帕海) is right at the edge of town, where yaks graze on the seasonal wetlands.

Travel Map of Shangri-La China: How Many Days to Spend in Shangri-La?

Most of my travelers find that 3 to 5 days is the sweet spot to stay in Shangri-La.

This gives you enough time to see the city highlights without rushing and leaves room for a journey into the northern mountains.

Insider Tip

I recommend spending 1-2 days in the city center, another day or two in the immediate outskirts, and at least 2 days if you plan to head to the remote north.

#1 Travel Map of Shangri-La China: A Dukezong Ancient Town Map

Dukezong Ancient Town Map
Dukezong Ancient Town Map

You don't need a car for this part of your Travel Map of Shangri-La China. The best way to experience the old town is on FOOT! There are 3 gates open: the North, East and South Gate.

My Favorite Route

The North Gate → Dukezong Flower Alley → Sifang Street → Moonlight Plaza → Intangible Cultural Heritage Center → Great Prayer Flag → the "Stupa within a Stupa" → Daguishan Park.

Start at the North Gate archway, then wander through the Dukezong Flower Alley (独克宗花巷) toward Sifang Street (四方街).

Then, make your way to Moonlight Plaza (月光广场), visit the Intangible Cultural Heritage Center (古城非遗体验中心), and see the Great Prayer Flag (大经幡).

Don't miss the "Stupa within a Stupa" (和谐塔中塔) before ending your climb at Daguishan Park (大龟山公园) to spin the world's largest prayer wheel.

Half a day to a full day is enough for this slow-paced cultural immersion!

I went on a 5d/4n Yangtze River cruise from Yichang to Chongqing. The cruise ship was relatively new and the cabin was clean and comfortable. There was enough food selection to cater for everyone’s tastes. The crew members were very helpful and polite, one (Cindy) even helped me get the food for every meal. There were also enough activities on board like movies, spa etc if one opted out of land excursions. The land excursions were very enjoyable. Despite my temporary restricted mobility, I was assisted in getting on and off the ship and when the wheelchair was required, the staff members offered to help in pushing it. Thalia from Asia Odyssey had been exceptionally helpful, advising me on which land excursion was not suitable for me and even sent a requested foldable stool to the hotel for my use in the shower on our extended 2-day stay in Chongqing post cruise. Overall, this cruise had been a very good and pleasant experience for me. read more

Personal attention and great follow up made this trip put together by my agent, Runny, truly amazing. She even went over and above her duties and personally made sure I received my permit to enter Tibet in person and showed me a little of Chengdu. She is truly a professional and an added bonus of being an exceptional young lady. I would be more than happy to travel with Asia Odyssey Travel again and most definitely will request for Runny to handle my tour in future should that happen. Thanks Runny and AOT. read more
