Hangzhou to Wuzhen: 3 Best Ways from Hangzhou to Wuzhen Water Town

Wuzhen, one of China's most visited water towns, is often called the "Venice of the East." It has grown far beyond a quiet village into an international destination, hosting major events like the World Internet Conference and the Wuzhen Theatre Festival.

Sitting right between Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou, Wuzhen is a popular day-trip destination from all three cities. Many visitors fold it into a broader itinerary, heading out in the morning and returning the same evening.

In this guide, we focus on one question only: how do you get from Hangzhou to Wuzhen? There is no train station in Wuzhen itself, so getting there means figuring out high-speed rail transfers, long-distance buses, or taxis.

We cover every option with 2026 schedules, prices, and step-by-step directions - even if you don't have local apps installed.

Key Takeaways

  • Wuzhen is 80 km north of Hangzhou, easy for a day trip.
  • Direct bus is best for first-timer visitors, no transfers needed.
  • You can easily travel from Wuzhen to Shanghai directly.

Hangzhou to Wuzhen Distance (80 KM) & Route Map

Bailian Pagoda, Wuzhen
Bailian Pagoda, Wuzhen

Wuzhen sits about 80 kilometers north of Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province. The route runs north from Hangzhou toward Tongxiang and Huzhou, passing flat countryside and small water towns.

In real travel time, that usually means:

  • about 5 hours by direct bus
  • about 5 to 2 hours by high-speed train plus transfer
  • about 2 hours by taxi from the West Lake area

So yes, Wuzhen is close enough for a day trip from Hangzhou. That is one reason why so many visitors add it to a Hangzhou itinerary.

You can leave in the morning, explore the ancient town all day, and be back in Hangzhou for a late dinner - or continue east to Shanghai if that's your next stop.

Most visitors head to Wuzhen Xizha (West Scenic Zone), which is the main area with canals, museums, and historic streets. When we say "Wuzhen" in this guide, we mean Xizha unless noted otherwise.

Local Tips:

For most first-time foreign travelers, I recommend the direct bus from Hangzhou to Wuzhen.

The reason is simple. The train is fast, but Wuzhen has no railway station. You still need to change again after reaching Tongxiang. That extra step is easy for experienced local travelers, but it can feel tiring if this is your first time in China.

That said, the train is still a very good backup. If you are staying near Hangzhou East Railway Station, or if you enjoy high-speed rail travel in China, the train route is absolutely workable.

Best Way 1: Direct Bus from Hangzhou to Wuzhen (Most Recommended)

 Wuzhen Ancient Town

For most visitors, the direct bus is the best way to get from Hangzhou to Wuzhen. A direct coach takes you from central Hangzhou straight to the Wuzhen Xizha scenic area gate. The fare is ¥45 (about $6 USD), and the ride takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Best Bus Stations for First-time Travelers (Wulin Gate, Wanghu, East Station)

Hangzhou has several bus departure points for Wuzhen. We ranked them for convenience, location, and ease for first-time tourists.

Station Address Distance to City Center Why Choose It
Wulinmen (武林门驿站) 372 Tiyuchang Rd, Hangzhou ~1.5 km Top pick - right in the city center, Metro Lines 1 & 3, surrounded by shops and restaurants
Wanghu Station (望湖驿站) 2 Huancheng West Rd, Gongshu ~3 km West Lake waterfront, walking distance to Broken Bridge and Lakeside area
East Station (华辰银座) Exit C, Xintang Metro Station ~8 km Best if arriving by high-speed rail and heading straight to Wuzhen

Wulinmen is the top pick for foreign travelers. If you're staying anywhere in downtown Hangzhou, start here.

Wanghu Station is the next best choice. If your hotel is near Broken Bridge or the Lakeside area, this station saves you a trip across town.

Hangzhou East Railway Station (Huachen Yinzuo Stop) works well if you're arriving by train from another city and want to head straight to Wuzhen. It's a practical backup, especially if you're connecting from a high-speed rail journey.

Essential Address:

Wulinmen: No.372, Tiyuchang Road, Hanghzou (杭州市体育场路372号)

Wanghu: No.2 Huanchenxi Road, Gongsu District, Hanghzou (杭州市拱墅区环城西路2号)

Bus Fares, Schedules & Booking Apps (Baba Kuai Ba & Hangchangyun)

A one-way ticket costs ¥45 from any of the stations above. Buses run throughout the day, with the ride taking about 1.5 hours.

To book tickets, you have two main options. The first is the Baba Kuaiba (巴巴快巴) mini-program on WeChat, which lets you reserve a seat in advance. The second is the Hangchangyun (杭长运) mini-program. You can also buy tickets on the spot.

For The Return Trip

You'll find a small wooden ticket booth directly across from the Xizha Visitor Service Center. Buy your ticket there and buses run until evening.

Best Way 2: How to Get from Hangzhou to Wuzhen by Train

Is There a Direct Train from Hangzhou to Wuzhen?

There is no direct train from Hangzhou to Wuzhen. Wuzhen does not have its own train station. The closest stations are Tongxiang(28km) and Huzhou Nanxun(17km).

You must take a high-speed train to Tongxiang(桐乡) or Huzhou Nanxun(湖州南浔), then transfer to a local bus or taxi. This route is fast and offers late-evening services for those staying for the night scenery.

Hangzhou East → Tongxiang High-Speed Train (Schedules, Fares, Duration)

Hangzhou East Railway Station
Hangzhou East Railway Station

This is the most popular train route. You can book tickets through the China Railway 12306 app or through Trip.com if you prefer an English-language interface.

Detail Info
Route Hangzhou East Station → Tongxiang Station
Daily Departures ~30 trains
Operating Hours 6:46 AM - 10:13 PM
Travel Time 17-34 minutes
Fare (2nd Class) ¥20-26

Tongxiang Station → Wuzhen Xizha: Buses & Taxis (Transfer Guide)

Once you step out of Tongxiang Station, you have two ways to reach Wuzhen.

  • Local bus K281 or K282: Fare is 2 yuan. Ride time is about 50 minutes to Wuzhen Bus Station. Then take bus K350 or 7213 for another 10 minutes to Xizha gate (also 2 yuan).
  • Taxi ride: 28 kilometers, about 40 minutes, costing 50 to 60 yuan.
For the return trip:

Take the night bus K282 from Xizha to Tongxiang Station. The last bus is at 21:30, costing 2 yuan. From Tongxiang, you can catch a high-speed train back to Hangzhou East until late.

Alternative: Hangzhou West → Huzhou Nanxun → Wuzhen (Backup Route)

This route can work well if you are already near Hangzhou West or if the Tongxiang option does not fit your schedule.

Detail Info
Route Hangzhou West Station → Huzhou Nanxun Station
Daily Departures ~16 trains

Fare (2nd Class) ¥35-55

From Huzhou Nanxun Station, Wuzhen Xizha is just 17 kilometers away. A taxi takes about 20 minutes and costs ¥30 to ¥40 - this is the recommended transfer method.

There is a public bus (Tongxiang Tour Route 4), but it only runs 3 times a day (10:00, 14:30, 18:30), so it's not practical for most travelers.

Best Way 3: Hangzhou to Wuzhen by Taxi or Private Transfer (Comfort Option)

If budget isn't your main concern and you just want the simplest possible experience, a taxi or private car is the way to go. From the West Lake area, the drive to Wuzhen takes about 2 hours and costs roughly ¥150 to ¥250.

This option makes the most sense for families with young children, small groups who can split the fare, or anyone with heavy luggage.

For a more tailored experience, you can also book a private transfer with an English-speaking driver through a travel service like Asia Odyssey Travel - which brings extra peace of mind if you don't speak Chinese. Contact us Now!

Your Wuzhen Itinerary: Must-See Spots in Xizha

 Wuzhen Ancient Town
Wuzhen Ancient Town

Once you arrive, most travelers should focus on Xizha, also called the West Scenic Area. It is the most famous part of Wuzhen and the best area for canals, old streets, museums, bridges, and night views.

Here is a simple sightseeing route based on your list of must-see places:

Muxin Art Museum → Xiqing Hall → Zhaoming Academy → Three-Inch Golden Lotus Museum → Wuzhen Post Office → Pingshu Storytelling House → White Lotus Pagoda → Renji Bridge → Water Theater → General Wu Temple → Nvhong Street → Lingshui Residence → Water Market

Pro Tips:

If you have more time, stay until after dark. Wuzhen is beautiful in the daytime, but it feels much more magical at night.

Wuzhen to Nanxun Ancient Town: A Side Trip Worth 30 Minutes

Nanxun Water Town
Nanxun Water Town

Nanxun is Wuzhen's quieter neighbor, sitting just 30 kilometers to the north. While Wuzhen is polished and well-touristed, Nanxun feels more lived-in.

It's known for its unique blend of Chinese and European architecture - grand mansions built by Qing-dynasty silk merchants who traded with the West.

Option Time Cost Departures
Scenic Shuttle Bus ~40 min ¥20/person 8:25, 10:10, 11:40, 13:50, 15:20, 16:45
Taxi ~30 min ¥30-50 Anytime
Local Tips:

If you have two days in the area, spending one in Wuzhen and one in Nanxun is a wonderful combination. If you're limited to one day, Nanxun makes a great afternoon extension after a morning in Wuzhen.

Should You Return to Hangzhou or Continue to Shanghai After Wuzhen?

This is a question worth thinking about before you leave Hangzhou. Wuzhen sits roughly halfway between Hangzhou and Shanghai, so depending on your itinerary, it might make more sense to continue east to Shanghai rather than backtracking west to Hangzhou.

Back to Hangzhou: Take the direct return bus from the Xizha ticket booth (¥45, 1.5 hours), or retrace the train route via Tongxiang.

Onward to Shanghai by direct bus:

Destination Fare Time Departures
Shanghai Hongqiao West Bus Station ¥55 ~1h 40min 8:50, 11:25, 15:05, 17:50
Shanghai South Station ¥55 ~1h 40min 8:10, 9:20, 10:55, 12:00, 13:10, 15:50, 17:20

Onward to Shanghai by train: Take a taxi or bus to either Tongxiang Station or Huzhou Nanxun Station, then catch a high-speed train to Shanghai.

How to Plan a Hangzhou to Wuzhen Itinerary?

Broken Bridge, West Lake

A two-day itinerary works perfectly for combining Hangzhou and Wuzhen.

Spend your first day exploring Hangzhou's highlights - West Lake, the tea villages, and the historic streets. On the second day, take a day trip to Wuzhen Water Town before heading back to Shanghai or returning to Hangzhou.

Day 1 - Hangzhou City Tour: China National Tea Museum → Meijiawu Tea Village → West Lake → Jingci Temple → Qinghefang Ancient Street

Day 2 - Wuzhen Day Trip: Wuzhen Water Town (Xizha Scenic Area) → head to Hangzhou or Shanghai

I booked the Yangtze 1 through Asia Odyssey Travel, and the whole trip was so well-coordinated. Starting in Yichang at Nine Pier, the cruise offered a smooth and scenic journey. One of the highlights was sailing directly through the Three Gorges Dam—watching the locks in action from the deck was fascinating. The cabin wasn’t huge, but it was comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless. The all-inclusive setup was great—no extra costs, which made budgeting easy. And the crew surprised us with a fun performance one evening. read more

Have been traveling solo for 6 months and booked this trip to Bhutan which without a doubt has been the highlight in my journey. We were a group of 3 (arranged by a lady called Zeva) and we had 2 tour guides (Yeser and Srin) who looked after us brilliantly. Yeser had such a wealth of knowledge and answered my never ending questions with politeness and respect and Srin was our driver.Occasionally the roads seemed dangerous but Srin was so cautious and safe i never felt uneasy. Two wonderful men. The Tigers Nest Monastery blew me away (doubt I will ever witness such magnificence again) and the glorious temples and ornate buildings were a sight to behold. Our accommodation was the best I've stayed in for 6 months. Our first accom (for 3 nights in total) was a tent and it was like a luxury 5 star hotel...if only all my rooms were like that. If you get the chance go to Bhutan. It is quiet, non touristy and the people are kind, respectful and want to engage with you. I have been to over 80 countries and few I would return to however Bhutan will definitely be visited by me again. read more
