One look at the map makes it much easier to understand. Putuoshan is located in Putuoshan Island of Zhoushan, across the sea from Shanghai, separated by Hangzhou Bay.
The island itself is quite small. It sits just off the coast of Zhoushan's main island and to the northeast of Zhujiajian Island. Because of this, you won't find any bridges or tunnels connecting it directly to the mainland.
How to Get to Putuoshan Island?
To reach Putuoshan, you'll first travel to Zhoushan (or nearby Zhujiajian), and then take a short ferry ride to the island. This final ferry connection is the only way to access Putuoshan—and honestly, it's part of the experience.
There is only one main arrival pier on the island: Putuoshan Passenger Terminal, located on the southern side. Most ferries depart from two nearby ports:
- Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Wharf (the closest and most commonly used)
- Banshengdong Passenger Center
- A day trip from Shanghai to Mount Putuo is not practical. You'll need to stay at least one night, either on Putuoshan Island or in Zhoushan.
- During major holidays Wugongzhi Wharf can get extremely crowded. Waiting times for the ferry may reach 2–3 hours.

Are There Any Direct Ferries from Shanghai to Putuoshan?
There used to be a direct overnight ferry from Shanghai to Mount Putuo.
The ferry departed from Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal, located at the mouth of the Huangpu River, about 22 km from the Bund.
It was a convenient option—you could board in the evening (around 7:00 PM), sleep overnight on the ship, and arrive at Putuoshan the next morning around 7:00 AM.
However, this overnight ferry service is currently suspended. It may return in the future, but for now, there are no direct ferries operating between Shanghai and Putuoshan.
Are There Flights from Shanghai to Putuoshan?
No, there are currently no flights from Shanghai to Putuoshan.
You might notice Zhoushan Putuoshan Airport on the map, located on Zhujiajian Island, quite close to Putuoshan. However, because the distance from Shanghai is relatively short, there are no scheduled flights between the two cities.
That said, if you're traveling from farther cities like Beijing, Harbin, or Xiamen, flying to Zhoushan can be a convenient option. From the airport, it's just a short transfer to the ferry terminal, followed by a quick boat ride to Putuoshan.
Can I Drive from Shanghai to Putuoshan?
Yes—you can drive from Shanghai to Mount Putuo, and in some cases, it's actually one of the most convenient options.
The drive takes about 4–5 hours, depending on traffic, and follows modern highways and sea bridges toward Zhoushan. It's especially suitable if you're traveling with family or prefer a flexible schedule.
However, there's one important limitation: your car cannot go onto Putuoshan Island.
