Shanghai to Putuoshan: 5-Hour Car & 20-Min Ferry

Putuoshan Island is one of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, located on a small island in the Zhoushan Islands off the eastern coast of China.

On the map, Shanghai and Putuoshan face each other across the sea, with a straight-line distance of only 140 kilometers. However, the actual road distance is more than 300 kilometers.

The island where Putuoshan is located has no bridges or undersea tunnels connecting it to the mainland or other islands, so it can only be reached by ferry.

Traveling from Shanghai to Putuoshan requires first arriving at a nearby main island, then taking a short ferry ride to Putuoshan Island.

This guide will walk you through the best ways to travel from Shanghai to Putuoshan, including transport routes, ferry connections, and key travel tips to help you plan your visit smoothly.

Key Takeaways

  • Shanghai to Mount Putuo's distance is about 300 km. A one-way trip takes 4–5 hours, so a 2-day trip is recommended.
  • Putuoshan is located on an island, and ferry is the only way to access it. Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Wharf is the most convenient departure point.
  • The most straightforward route is by road to Zhujiajian (4–4.5 hours), followed by a 20-minute ferry to the island.
  • Another option is to take a high-speed train to Ningbo (2–2.5 hours), then a bus to Zhujiajian (1.5–2 hours), and finally the ferry.
  • Travel during major holidays can be very crowded. Ferry queues at Wugongzhi Wharf may take 2–3 hours, so weekdays are a much better choice.

So, where exactly is Mount Putuo?

One look at the map makes it much easier to understand. Putuoshan is located in Putuoshan Island of Zhoushan, across the sea from Shanghai, separated by Hangzhou Bay.

The island itself is quite small. It sits just off the coast of Zhoushan's main island and to the northeast of Zhujiajian Island. Because of this, you won't find any bridges or tunnels connecting it directly to the mainland.

How to Get to Putuoshan Island?

To reach Putuoshan, you'll first travel to Zhoushan (or nearby Zhujiajian), and then take a short ferry ride to the island. This final ferry connection is the only way to access Putuoshan—and honestly, it's part of the experience.

  • Zhujiajian Wugongzhi Wharf (the closest and most commonly used)
  • Banshengdong Passenger Center
Note
  • A day trip from Shanghai to Mount Putuo is not practical. You'll need to stay at least one night, either on Putuoshan Island or in Zhoushan.
  • During major holidays Wugongzhi Wharf can get extremely crowded. Waiting times for the ferry may reach 2–3 hours.
  • If possible, plan your visit on weekdays (Monday to Friday) for a smoother experience.

Why Choose This Option

Why Choose This Option

However, there are a few things to keep in mind.

But I am glad I did as it was an amazing experience especially with a wonderful tour guide like Howard. He was very caring and patient and took good care of everyone in our group. His English was remarkable and explained to us in detail about Guizhou’s culture and history which I found fascinating. Kudos to our driver Mr Yueh too. Such a cheerful guy and careful driver that in spite of our trips up and down the narrow mountain roads we felt safe. Thanks again to Howard and Shifu Yueh for making this a memorable trip. read more
