Suzhou to Wuzhen: A Train&Bus Combo vs. Tourist Express | 2026

Located just 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of the "City of Gardens," Wuzhen (乌镇) is one of the most accessible and rewarding escapes from the bustle of Suzhou.

The journey from Suzhou to Wuzhen takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by road, making it a popular day trip.

Whether you prefer the simplicity of a direct shuttle or want to navigate the Suzhou to Wuzhen train and bus combo, getting there is a breeze if you know the tricks.

In this guide, I'll break down every transport hack and itinerary tip you need to make the leap from the gardens to the water town perfectly.

Key Takeaways

  • The Best Public Way to Travel: For most, the Direct Tourist Shuttle is the winner—it's affordable (RMB 55) and takes you straight to the scenic area in about 90 minutes.
  • The Train Strategy: Taking the high-speed train is fast, but remember that the stations (Tongxiang, Jiaxing South, or Shengze) are all 30–60 minutes away from Wuzhen by taxi.
  • Navigation Tip: Wuzhen is split into Dongzha and Xizha. Use the free shuttle bus to move between them—just watch the 4:30 PM or 5:00 PM cutoff time.
  • The "One-Day" vs. "Overnight" Choice: A day trip lets you see the highlights of both gates, but an overnight stay allows you to experience the "Midnight Magic".

Where is Wuzhen? How Far is Wuzhen from Suzhou? 3 Options to Get There

Suzhou to Wuzhen Map
Suzhou to Wuzhen Map

Wuzhen Water Town is located in Tongxiang, Zhejiang Province (30.75° N, 120.48° E), right in the center of the Shanghai-Hangzhou-Suzhou "Golden Triangle."

If you are looking south from Suzhou on map, Wuzhen is your next natural stop.

The Suzhou to Wuzhen distance is about 80 kilometers (50 miles). By road, you are looking at a quick 1.5 to 2-hour trip.

It's close enough for a day trip, but just far enough to feel like you've stepped back a few centuries.

Here are the 3 best ways to make the journey from Suzhou to Wuzhen:

Transport Mode Distance Travel Time Travel Cost (Per Person) Note
Private Car 80 km (50 miles) ~1.5 Hours Included in tour Hotel-to-hotel; stops at other water towns.
Tourist Shuttle 80 km (50 miles) 1 hour 40 mins RMB 55 Direct express from Suzhou center.

#1. The Best Option from Suzhou to Wuzhen: A 1.5h Private Ride with a Side Trip to Zhouzhuang

Asia Odyssey Travel's Private Ride in Jiangsu
Asia Odyssey Travel's Private Ride in Jiangsu

If you want to skip the bus stations and the luggage hauling, our private car service is the way to go. It's the gold standard for a reason.

Usually, we take the Youxin Expressway or the G1522, covering the Suzhou to Wuzhen distance of 70-90 kilometers in about 1.5 hours.

But at Asia Odyssey Travel, we don't treat this like a simple taxi ride. Since you're already heading south, why not turn a "transfer day" into a full-blown adventure?

Why Our Travelers Love the Private Ride

✔ Hotel to Hotel: We pick you up from your Suzhou lobby and drop you right at your Wuzhen guesthouse. No dragging suitcases over cobblestones!

✔ Bonus Stops: Since we have the wheels, we can easily stop at Zhouzhuang or Tongli along the way. It's like getting two water towns for the price of one.

✔ A Local Pal on Board: Our guides don't just drive; they share the deep stories of Jiangnan culture that you won't find on a map.

✔ Total Comfort: Whether you're a couple or a big family, we've got you covered. We use 5-seat cars, 7-seat SUVs, or 14-seat vans to make sure everyone has plenty of legroom.

#2. Suzhou to Wuzhen by Tourist Shuttle: A Direct Express in 1.5 Hours

Suzhou North Square Bus Station
Suzhou North Square Bus Station

If you aren't booking a private tour, the Direct Tourist Shuttle is easily the best "public" way to go. It's a specialized express bus that skips all the annoying local stops.

For 55 RMB, it whisks you from the heart of Suzhou straight to the Wuzhen Xizha Scenic Area.

Factor Detail
Daily Frequency 8 Shuttles
Schedule 08:00, 09:00, 11:00, 12:00, 13:15, 14:15, 16:00, 17:00
Duration 1 hour 40 minutes
Departure Suzhou North Square Bus Station (苏州北广场汽车站)
Arrival Wuzhen Xizha Scenic Area (乌镇西栅)
Pro Tip

The departure station, Suzhou North Square Bus Station (苏州北广场汽车站), is right next to the main Suzhou Railway Station. It's about 20 minutes from the city center by car or 40 minutes by metro.

How to Book Your Bus Ticket from Suzhou to Wuzhen (Step-by-Step)

You don't need to go to the station early to buy a ticket. You can do it right on your phone:

  1. Open WeChat and search for the Haoxing (好行网) mini-program.
  2. Type "Wuzhen" (乌镇) into the search bar.
  3. Select the route ending at Wuzhen Xizha (乌镇西栅).
  4. Pick your time and tap "Book Now" (立即预订).
  5. Log in, enter your name and phone number, and pay.

Just show your digital ticket when you arrive at the station! If you need any help tickets booking or tour plan, contact Asia Odyssey Travel.

#3. Suzhou to Wuzhen Train: A Combo of Train & Bus via Tongxiang, Jiaxing South or Shengze

Suzhou Railway Station
Suzhou Railway Station

I'll be completely honest with you: I usually don't recommend taking the Suzhou to Wuzhen train.

Why? Because there is no railway station in Wuzhen. You'll end up taking a train to a nearby city, only to find yourself hunting for a bus or a taxi to finish the journey. It often takes longer than the bus!

However, if you love the speed of the rails or the shuttles are sold out, you have 3 main routes via Tongxiang (桐乡), Jiaxing South(嘉兴南), or the new Shengze (盛泽) station.

Step 1: Depart from Suzhou

First, you need to get to the right station in Suzhou.

You'll likely depart from one of three spots: Suzhou Station (苏州站), Suzhou North (苏州北站), or the newer Shengze Station (盛泽站).

Station Distance to Center Best Way to Get There Travel Time
Suzhou Station 3 km (1.8 miles) Metro Line 2 30 Minutes
Suzhou North Station 20 km (12 miles) Metro Line 1 & 2 1 Hour
Shengze Station 45 km (28 miles) Private Car 1 Hour
Where to Depart

I usually recommend Suzhou Station for most of my travelers because it's right in the heart of the city and easy to reach by metro.

If you are staying further out near the high-tech zones, Suzhou North might be your go-to.

Shengze is close to the water town geographically, but it's quite far from the Suzhou city center, so check your hotel location first!

Step 2: Choose Your Transfer Hub

Here is how the 3 "finish lines" compare. If you have to choose, Jiaxing South is usually best because it has the most frequent trains.

Transfer Hub Train Duration Daily Frequency To Wuzhen Xizha
Tongxiang (桐乡) 1.5 - 2 Hours 5 Departures 30 km (40-min taxi)
Jiaxing South (嘉兴南) 1 - 1.5 Hours 25+ Departures 44 km (1-hour taxi)
Shengze (盛泽) 1.5 Hours 3 Departures 40 km (30-min taxi)

Route A: Via Tongxiang (The Closest Stop)

This is the most logical route on paper because Tongxiang is the nearest rail hub to the water town.

However, with only 5 trains a day (08:02, 08:36, 11:57, 13:07, 13:55), you have to time it perfectly. You'll depart from either Suzhou Station or Suzhou North.

Once you land in Tongxiang, skip the 2-hour local bus (K281/K282). Grab a Didi or taxi for the final 30 km. It's a 45-minute drive and much easier with bags.

Pro Tip

Train Ticket Price: RMB 74–92 for Second Class; RMB 120–148 for First Class.

Route B: Via Jiaxing South (The Most Flexible)

This is my top pick if you must take the train.

Since there are over 25 departures daily (roughly every 10–25 minutes from 07:06 to 21:13), you won't be stuck waiting. You can catch these from Suzhou Station or Suzhou North.

The finish line is about 44 km to Wuzhen from here.

A taxi takes an hour. There is a bus (Route Y2), but it's a bit of a trek at 2 hours, so I'd stick to a car. A Didi or taxi takes 1 hour.

Pro Tip

Train Ticket Price: RMB 87–108 for Second Class; RMB 140–173 for First Class.

Bus Route Y2 Opening Hours: 06:30, 07:30, 08:50, 10:10, 11:30, 13:15, 15:00, 16:00, 17:30

Route C: Via Shengze (The Newest Option)

Shengze Station is quite close to Wuzhen, but the schedule is a bit "night owl" friendly. There are only 3 departures a day, and they all leave Suzhou Station in the evening (18:31, 19:47, and 20:03).

Since it's only 40 km away, a 30-minute taxi or Didi will get you to the gates of Wuzhen Water Town just in time to see the lanterns glowing over the water.

The bus option involves 3 transfers.

Pro Tip

Train Ticket Price: RMB 114 for Second Class; RMB 182 for First Class.

How to Get Around the Wuzhen Scenic Area?

 Wuzhen Ancient Town
Wuzhen Ancient Town

Once you've arrived, it's time to trade your wheels for walking shoes or a wooden boat. Wuzhen is a pedestrian paradise, split into 2 main sections: Xizha (West Gate) and Dongzha (East Gate).

Here is how to navigate the town like a local.

Inside the Wuzhen Xizha (The Romantic & Polished Side)

Xizha (西栅) is the larger, more developed area—it's where you'll find the iconic night lights and boutique guesthouses.

Entry is 150 RMB, and it's best explored on foot or by boat to really soak in the details.

☞ The Walking Loop:

Start at the Wuzhen Grand Theatre (乌镇大剧院) and the Mu Xin Art Museum (木心美术馆), then wander through the Indigo Fabric Dye Workshop (草木本色染坊).

Make your way to the Wedding Museum (喜庆堂), grab a seat at the Qiaoliqiao Teahouse (桥里桥茶楼), and finish by the White Lotus Pagoda (白莲塔).

☞ The Rowboat Experience:

For 60 RMB per person (or 240 RMB to charter a private boat for 6), you can take a 25-minute drift from Andufang Pier (安渡坊码头) to Ruyi Bridge Pier (如意桥码头).

Inside the Wuzhen Dongzha Scenic Area (The Traditional & Living Side)

Dongzha (东栅) is a bit smaller and feels more "raw" and traditional. Entry is 110 RMB.

☞ The Walking Loop:

Check out the Boxing Boat (拳船) and the Ancient Bed Museum (江南百床馆) first. Don't miss the Sanbai Wine Workshop (三白酒坊: the smell of the fermenting rice is incredible!) and the Shadow Puppet Theatre (应家桥皮影戏馆).

☞ The Rowboat Experience:

Boats here are a bit cheaper at 30 RMB per person. It's a shorter 15-minute ride, from Youchuan Pier (游船码头) to Xinhuaqiao Pier (新华桥码头).

Getting Between the Wuzhen Xizha and Dongzha

You don't need to worry about the 2.5 km distance anymore—the two gates are just a few minutes apart.

There is a free shuttle bus right outside the scenic area entrances. It runs every 30 minutes and takes about 15 minutes to zip between Xizha and Dongzha.

From May to September, the shuttle runs from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. During the cooler months (October to April), it wraps up a little earlier, running from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

Pro Tip

If you plan on doing both, grab the Combo Ticket for 190 RMB. It saves you a nice chunk of change compared to buying them separately!

How to Plan a Trip from Suzhou to Wuzhen? The One-Day Rush vs. Overnight Magic

 Wuzhen Post Office, Wuzhen

Suzhou (1-2 Days): The Perfect Prelude

Before you even think about the Suzhou to Wuzhen trip, you have to give the "City of Gardens" its due. 1 or 2 days is the "sweet spot" to see the highlights without feeling rushed.

On Day 1, start at the Lingering Garden (留园) and Tiger Hill (虎丘) before wandering the 800-year-old Pingjiang Road. End your night among the glowing lanterns of Shantang Street.

On Day 2, visit the Suzhou Museum then head from Suzhou to Hangzhou, stopping at Zhouzhuang Ancient Town along the way. Finish with the lively street food of Hefang Street.

The One-Day Rush from Suzhou to Wuzhen

If you are short on time, a day trip from Suzhou to Wuzhen Water Town is totally doable.

You'll see the highlights, snap the iconic bridge photos, and be back in Suzhou for a late dinner. To make it work, you'll want to start early to beat the tour buses.

Time Activity
8:00 AM Hop on the tourist shuttle or jump in your private car from Suzhou.
10:00 AM Arrive at Wuzhen Water Town and start exploring the East Gate (Dongzha).
12:30 PM Grab a quick lunch of soy-sauce duck or "Victory Cake" by the canal.
1:30 PM Take the free shuttle to the West Gate (Xizha) for a deep dive into the museums.
5:00 PM Catch your ride back to Suzhou just as the evening crowds begin to arrive.

Note: The timeline is for reference only; actual tour duration may vary.

The Overnight Magic in Wuzhen

If you ask me, this is where the real soul of the town lies!

Around 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM, the "Magic" starts: the yellow lanterns flicker on, reflecting off the dark water, and the town transforms into a glowing wonderland.

To make the most of it, I recommend staying in a boutique guesthouse inside the Xizha area and following this Evening Adventure Route:

Visitor Center → Andufang Pier (Take a Boat) → Ruyi Bridge Pier (如意桥码头) → White Lotus Pagoda (白莲塔) → Nvhong Street (女红街) → Lingshui Ju Light Show (灵水居光影秀) → Visitor Center

This route lets you see the lights from the water first, catch the sunset from the pagoda, and then wind through the most colorful streets before the light show starts.

And the best part? Waking up at 6:00 AM to see the morning mist on the water before the first bus arrives from Suzhou. It's the only way to experience Wuzhen in total peace.

Frequently Asked Questions
Expand All
Is a day trip from Suzhou to Wuzhen enough? +
It's doable! You can see both the East and West Gates in about 6–7 hours. However, if you want to see the town glowing at night without rushing for the last bus, staying overnight is the way to go.
Is Wuzhen closer to Shanghai or Hangzhou? +
Wuzhen is actually closer to Hangzhou. It sits right in the golden triangle between the three cities. But the drive from Hangzhou is only about 1 hour (60 km), whereas Shanghai is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours (120 km) away. This makes it a perfect middle stop if you are traveling between the two.
How much does a taxi or Didi cost? +
A one-way Didi from Suzhou city center to Wuzhen usually costs between RMB 200 and 300, depending on traffic and the time of day.
Which gate should I visit first? +
Always start with Dongzha (East Gate) in the morning to see the traditional workshops. Save Xizha (West Gate) for the afternoon and evening—that's where the best lighting and dining are located.
Can I buy shuttle tickets at the station? +
Yes, but they sell out fast, especially on weekends. I always recommend using the Haoxing (好行网) mini-program on WeChat to grab yours in advance.
