Chengdu Panda Base Facts: Home of 200+ Pandas

As the world's largest panda breeding and research facility, the Chengdu Panda Base spans 3.07 square kilometers. First, you will not see 237 pandas. A large number of them are in the research and breeding areas, which are strictly off-limits to visitors.
But, the pandas you can see are spread out across a massive area. The base is divided into different sections for different age groups.
You have the Sunshine and Moonlight Delivery Houses for the newborns and infants (viewing is often through glass), enclosures for the hyperactive "sub-adult" pandas (these are the teenagers, and they're the most playful), and large habitats for the adults.
The base also has a large and very active population of Red Pandas. Their enclosures are fantastic, and they are often much more active and visible than the giant pandas, especially later in the day. Don't miss them.

- Off Season (November - March): 8:00am - 5:00pm
Best Time to Visit Chengdu Panda Base
The Chengdu Panda Base is bustling every day because it is an ideal time to visit these adorable animals throughout the year. Giant pandas have thick fur, which makes them tolerant of cold weather but sensitive to heat.
Therefore, during the summer, pandas spend more time indoors and are less active. However, the best time to observe panda cubs is from July to September during the summer months when they are born. It's the perfect opportunity to see these cute panda babies.
During other seasons, especially in spring and autumn, pandas prefer outdoor activities. During this time, you can observe them playing and exhibiting interesting behaviors throughout the scenic area.
Regardless of the season, the best time to visit the pandas is from 7:30 to 10:00 in the morning. This is their feeding time and when they are most active. You can fully appreciate their adorable behaviors and observe their appetite.
What to See in Chengdu Panda Base

The park is HUGE, and if you don't have a plan, you'll get tired and miss the best parts.
Adult Giant Pandas (2+ years)
Where to Find Them: Moon Valley, Sun Hills, Treasure Lake areas
This is where you'll see the classic panda scene: giant, fluffy pandas sitting around, munching on huge piles of bamboo. It's so peaceful to watch them. They also climb trees and just chill out in the weirdest, funniest positions.
Sub-Adult Pandas (1-2 Years)
Where to Find Them: Sun Hills Pavilions
These guys are way more fun than the adults. They have a ton of energy and are always wrestling, rolling down hills, and just being goofy. They are seriously entertaining to watch.
Panda Cubs & Nurseries - Highlights of Chengdu Panda Base

As soon as you get inside, ignore everything else and head straight for the panda nurseries. This is the main event, and you want to see them before the massive crowds show up.
Moonlight Delivery House: This is for the newborns. They are so tiny and fragile they're kept in incubators. It's like a real baby nursery, but for pandas. If you go in the morning, you might catch the staff weighing them.
It's the cutest thing you will ever see. Super important: NO FLASH PHOTOS. They are very strict about this because it can hurt the babies' eyes.
Sunshine Delivery House: Next door are the "toddlers." These guys are a few months old, fluffy, and starting to move around. Try to be there for feeding time at 9:00 AM or 3:00 PM. You'll see them tumbling all over each other trying to get milk from a bottle. It's hilarious.
Other Cool Animals - Red Panda, Swans & Peacocks
Red Pandas: Okay, you HAVE to see the red pandas. They are in their own area (Red Panda Villa No.1 and No.2). They look like red raccoons and are a thousand times more active than the giant pandas. They are amazing climbers and are always zipping around.
Swans and Peacocks: As you walk around, you'll see a big lake (Swan Lake near south gate) with black and white swans. Also, peacocks just wander around the park like they own the place, especially near the food areas. You don't have to look for them; they'll find you.
What You Can Probably Skip (Unless You're Really Into It)
The Museum: There's a big museum about panda history. Honestly, unless you're a huge science nerd or it starts raining, you can probably skip it. The coolest thing inside is a life-size panda skeleton, but the real pandas are much more interesting.
The Bamboo Tower: This is a tall tower that gives you a 360-degree view of the park. It's cool if you want a great photo for Instagram, especially at sunset. But if your feet are hurting, don't feel bad about skipping it. You can take an elevator up, though.

How to Plan A Chengdu Panda Base Tour

One Day Chengdu Panda Base Tour
For a one day tour of the Chengdu Panda Base, I'd recommend spending half a day at the base to see the adorable pandas. Then head back into central Chengdu to explore the city sights.
Stroll through People's Park and immerse yourself in local life, wander through the historical Wide and Narrow Alleys dating back 300 years for a glimpse into old Chengdu, and taste Chengdu flavors at Jinli Food Street. This allows you to experience the pandas along with a taste of Chengdu's laidback lifestyle secrets in just one day.
Alternatively, you could combine your Panda Base visit with other famous sites around Chengdu, like the ancient Sanxingdui Museum or Leshan Giant Buddha, the largest sitting Buddha statue in the world.
2 Days Chengdu Panda Base Tour
With two days in Chengdu, you could extend your trip to Leshan Giant Buddha or another top highlight of Chengdu - the famous Dujiangyan Irrigation System and sacred Taoist mountain, Qingcheng Shan.
Over 2 Days Chengdu Panda Base Tours
Dreaming of deeply exploring Chengdu and surrounding highlights after the Panda Base? Then plan for 2 days or more. Visit Buddhist holy sites like Mount Emei, the stunning Jiuzhai Valley National Park, the Four Sisters Mountains of western Sichuan, or laidback Kangding.
FAQs About Chengdu Panda Base

1. Can I Touch or Hold A Panda at the Chengdu Panda Base?
No, and this is a strict rule. The panda holding experiences were stopped completely several years ago to protect the pandas' health and well-being. The base is a conservation and research center first, not a petting zoo.
Be very suspicious of any tour or facility that claims to offer this—it's not a legitimate or ethical practice.
2. Are There Volunteer Programs at the Chengdu Panda Base?
The main Chengdu Panda Base in the city does not offer short-term volunteer programs for the general public.
However, the Dujiangyan Panda Base, which is a separate facility about a 90-minute drive from Chengdu, is famous for its "Panda Keeper for a Day" program. In this program, you can help prepare panda food, clean enclosures, and learn about their care from the staff.
You still won't get to hold them, but it's the most hands-on experience you can get. You must book this well in advance. See our Panda Volunteer Tours>>
3. Where Else Can I See Pandas in Chengdu Besides the Panda Base?
Honestly, the Chengdu Panda Base is the best place by far. However, you do have one other option right in the city: the Chengdu Zoo. It's a more traditional zoo and does have a few giant pandas.
But it's a very different experience—the enclosures aren't as large or modern, and the focus isn't solely on pandas. If your main goal is to see pandas in the best possible environment, stick with the Panda Base.
If you're looking for a different panda experience, the Dujiangyan base is your best bet for a day trip.
