Taipei Location Map: Where is Taipei on Map?

On Taiwan’s sweet potato-shaped island map, Taipei sits at the very top, tucked into the northern tip.
Here's what surprises people: Taipei isn't coastal. It's 25 kilometers inland that New Taipei City wraps around Taipei like a donut. The Tamsui River cuts through the city, flowing north to the ocean. Mountains to the east, beaches to the north.
Taipei City Map: Taipei Districts Map with City Center

Alright, let's break down this map of Taipei City. The city is officially made up of 12 districts, but as a visitor, you'll probably only spend time in a few key areas.
First, let's find the city center. Xinyi District on eastern Taipei is the modern, glamorous center of Taipei. It's where you see all the skyscrapers, including the famous Taipei 101.
Nearby is Zhongzheng District. You’ll see the huge Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall there. It's also where you'll find Taipei Main Station, the biggest transportation hub, so you'll likely pass through here a lot.
Just west of Xinyi is Daan District, which is a lively mix of everything. Especially around Yongkang Street, but it also has Daan Forest Park.
Looking at the west side. Here's Wanhua District, which is the oldest part of the city. This is where you'll find historic places like Longshan Temple and the popular, energetic Ximending area.

Taipei MRT Map (Taipei Metro Map): How to Travel Around Taipei by MRT

Okay, let's look at this Taipei MRT map. It might seem like a tangle of colorful lines at first, but it's actually the best, easiest, and cheapest way to get around the city.
Now, let's look at the key lines on the map. They are color-coded, which makes things simple. Five main lines plus the circular line make exploring foolproof.
Understanding the Lines:
The Red Line (Tamsui-Xinyi Line): This is probably the most important line for tourists (from south to north). It runs north-south and takes you directly to Taipei 101, the food scene at Dongmen Station (Yongkang Street), and the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
The Blue Line (Bannan Line): This line runs east to west. It’s perfect for getting to the historic Longshan Temple and the energetic Ximen area (Ximending). It also stops near the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
The Green Line (Songshan-Xindian Line): Diagonal slash through the city. Perfect for CKS Memorial and Gongguan.
The Brown Line (Wenhu Line): You'll use this line mainly to get to the Taipei Zoo, where you can connect to the Maokong Gondola for a scenic ride up to the tea plantations.
Key Transfer Stations:
- Taipei Main Station: Where red and blue meet. Underground maze but follow the color-coded signs.
- Zhongxiao Fuxing: Blue-brown junction. Shopping central.
- Guting: Green-orange crossroads. Student district hub.

Taipei Night Market Map: Top Night Market to Visit by MRT

You can't say you've been to Taipei without visiting its night markets. Let's use this Taipei Night Market Map with MRT transfers to find the best ones—getting there by train is super easy and avoids all the traffic.
The Big Three:
Shilin Night Market (Red Line - Jiantan Station, NOT Shilin)
Taipei's largest and most touristy. Two levels: street food downstairs, sit-down meals upstairs. Famous for XXL fried chicken, oyster omelets, and bubble tea. Gets packed by 8 PM on weekends.
Raohe Night Market (Green Line - Songshan Station)
More local, more compact. One straight lane makes navigation easy. Must-tries: black pepper buns at the entrance, medicinal pork rib soup. The Ciyou Temple at the entrance glows beautifully at night.
Ningxia Night Market (Red Line - Zhongshan Station, 10-min walk)
Foodie favorite. Michelin Bib Gourmand stalls cluster here. Less touristy, more quality. Try the oyster egg rolls and taro balls. For the best of local street food and night markets, try the Taiwan Food Tour by Asia Odyssey Travel.
Hidden Gems:
Tonghua/Linjiang Night Market (Red Line - Xinyi Anhe Station)
Where locals eat. Ice cream spring rolls and traditional soy milk for breakfast-at-night.
Huaxi Street Night Market (Blue Line - Longshan Temple Station)
Taipei's oldest, near the temple. Snake soup fame, but plenty of normal food too.
Gongguan Night Market (Green Line - Gongguan Station)
University area. Cheap eats, vintage shops, and "QQ" texture everything.

- The city's MRT system (the Red and Blue lines run right through it) to get to your hotel.
- The High-Speed Rail (HSR) to travel quickly to other cities in Taiwan like Taichung or Kaohsiung.
- The regular train system (TRA) for trips to other parts of the island.

Taipei Day Trip Map: Taipei to Yangmingshan, Jiufen, Shifen Map

We need to zoom out from our Taipei City map and look at a larger map of the whole region. These are the classic day trips, meaning they're outside the city but close enough to visit and come back in a day.
Trip 1: Yangmingshan
First, let's look directly north of the city. See this big green area? This is Yangmingshan National Park. It's a massive volcanic park. You can't take the MRT all the way. The easiest way is a two-step process:
- Take the Red MRT Line to Jiantan Station, Shilin, Beitou or Xinbeitou Station.
- From there, you'll transfer to a bus (30-40 min)

Trip 2: The Old Towns to the East (Jiufen & Shifen)
Now, let's look to the east of Taipei on our map. This is where you'll find the charming, historic towns of Jiufen and Shifen. They are very popular to visit on the same day because they are relatively close to each other.
First, go to Taipei Main Station and take a regular train (TRA) east to Ruifang Station. This ride takes about 40-60 minutes. (Taipei Main Station to Ruifang Station 17-30min)
From Ruifang, you have two options to get to the two towns:
To get to Shifen: At Ruifang Station, transfer to the charming, old-school Pingxi Branch Line train. (30 min tar train)
To get to Jiufen: From outside Ruifang Station, take a short bus ride up the winding mountain road.(20 min bus)
