Written by Lydia|Updated: 2025-07-23

I live and breathe this island, and I'm thrilled to give you the inside scoop on Taiwan weather in March 2026, ensuring an amazing trip!

Where to go and what to do in Taiwan in March? My mantra for Taiwan in March weather is: "North for Indoors, South for Sunshine; Mountain Mornings are Chilly, Coastal Breezes are Strong!"

This means you'll want to prioritize indoor attractions up north (Taipei), and enjoy full outdoor days in central (Alishan) and southern (Kenting) Taiwan.

What to wear in Taiwan in March? Pack a light down jacket for cold mountain mornings, and be ready for wind and sun protection along the coast.

Plus, stay tuned to the end for your ideal Taiwan March itinerary!

Your March Taiwan Weather Report: Spring Showers & Wild Temp Swings

Overall, Taiwan weather in March is mild (16-25°C average), with noticeable north-south differences.

The north typically sees 16–22°C, while the south enjoys warmer 19–27°C. Mountain areas like Alishan can have significant daily temperature swings (over 15°C!).

March is one of our wetter months, averaging 123mm and 18 rainy days island-wide.

Northern and central regions often have over 15 rainy days, while the south sees fewer than 7. It's a rainy period, but also the beautiful start of our flower season!

Despite showers, Taiwan in March offers a delightful, mild climate with blooming flowers.

Taipei, Taiwan Weather in March: Cool and Damp, with a Lot of Rain

Taipei weather in march is often cool and damp, with a high chance of rain (about 50% probability!).

You can expect consistent drizzle, medium rain, and sometimes even heavy downpours. Temperatures can fluctuate quite a bit, from a low of 16°C to a high of 21°C.

Here's a quick look at what you might encounter:

Avg. Temp Rainy Days My Travel Advice
16-21°C 15-18 days (50% medium/heavy rain) If possible, aim for late March as temperatures start to warm up (around 20°C). Always pack an umbrella and wear waterproof shoes! Prioritize indoor attractions like the Taipei Palace Museum.

Sun Moon Lake & Alishan Weather in March: Cloudy, with Chilly Mornings and Afternoon Showers

For central areas like Sun Moon Lake and Alishan, the weather of Taiwan in March tends to be mostly cloudy. Be prepared for chilly mornings in the high-altitude mountains, and occasional brief afternoon showers.

Alishan specifically can see temperatures from 5-13°C – quite a range! Sun Moon Lake is milder at 17-25°C. They both see a good amount of rain, but on clear days, they're perfect for outdoor adventures.

Here are my tips for these beautiful spots:

Avg. Temp Rainy Days My Travel Advice
Sun Moon Lake 17-25°C 16-18 days (Afternoon showers >40%) If you plan to ride the cable car for cherry blossoms, go after the rain!
Alishan 5-13°C >15 days (alternating sun/rain) Catch sunrise or cloud seas early, finish outdoor activities before 10:00 AM. Non-slip shoes are a must! Bring a light down jacket for chilly mornings.
Taichung 16-24°C 11-15 days Go join the fun at the Dajia Mazu Festival.

Leaving the rainy northern areas and cooler mountains behind, we head further south to a city known for its warmth and vibrant atmosphere – Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung, Taiwan Weather in March: Warmer, with Common Sunshine

The Kaohsiung weather in March starts feeling much warmer, typically 18-27°C. While we do get some rain (usually 4-7 days), sunshine is more common.

By late March, temperatures often feel almost summery – in 2025, it reached 30°C on March 25th! Just be mindful of stronger coastal winds.

Avg. Temp Rainy Days My Travel Advice
18-27°C 4-7 days (brief afternoon thunderstorms possible) Expect a noticeable warm-up by late March. Coastal winds can be quite strong, so dress accordingly.

Even further south, at Taiwan's tropical tip, lies Kenting – and let me tell you, its March weather is often a standout!

Kenting, Taiwan Weather in March: The Driest and Least Rainy Area

Kenting is the star for stable Taiwan weather in March! Temperatures here are a delightful 20-27°C, making it one of our warmest spots.

March to May is our northeast monsoon season, which surprisingly makes Kenting the driest and least rainy area on the island during this time.

Avg. Temp Rainy Days My Travel Advice
20-27°C <7 days The sea breeze can feel a bit cool, so pack a light windbreaker. You can comfortably enjoy outdoor activities all day here!

So, Where to Go in Taiwan in March?

Given the weather of Taiwan in March, I always recommend the sunnier south, like Kenting and Kaohsiung.

Of course, Taipei, as Taiwan's most popular arrival city, along with its charming surroundings like Yangmingshan and Zhuzihu, are still must-sees!

Plus, March marks the start of Taiwan's incredible flower season, offering fantastic spots for blossoms at places like Alishan, Sun Moon Lake's Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, Yangmingshan & Zhuzihu, Cingjing Farm, and Taoyuan Fairy Valley.

Knowing where to go is one thing, but what exactly should you do once you're there? March offers some incredible experiences, and I've got my personal 8 must-dos ready for you.

My Top 8 Picks: What to Do in Taiwan in March?

2. Explore Yangmingshan's Spring Blooms: Azaleas, Cherry Blossoms & Calla Lilies (March-April)

In March, you'll see beautiful mountain cherry blossoms and Yoshino cherry blossoms in Yangming Park and Pingdengli.

Head to Zhuzihu to pick gorgeous Calla Lilies (they're about NT$10 each!). I love walking the Dinghu Trail for photos with the Xiaoyoukeng volcano framed by flower fields.

My Rainy Day Backup: If it rains, my backup is the Flower Center Greenhou" or a relaxing soak in Beitou Hot Springs (try a private room at Grand View Resort Resort Beitou!).

3. Soar Over Sun Moon Lake: Cable Car to Formosan Village's Cherry Blossoms

Similar to Alishan, Sun Moon Lake have more cloudy and rainy days, but temperatures are slightly milder (17°C–25°C).

Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village is another fantastic spot for cherry blossoms – they have over 5,000 double-flowered "Feihan" cherry trees! Taking the Sun Moon Lake cable car to get a bird's-eye view of the blossoms mixed with green trees is just stunning.

Before that, you can cycle around Sun Moon Lake or take a boat cruise; the misty, rainy atmosphere can make it feel incredibly ethereal!

And don't miss out on lunch at the Ita Thao village – you absolutely have to try A-ma's Tea Eggs!

4. Catch Alishan's Cherry Blossom Magic, Sunrise & Cloud Seas (Mid-March to Mid-April)

In March Alishan, temperatures hover around 5-13°C, mostly cloudy with occasional showers, so pack a light down jacket for those chilly mornings.

Alishan's cherry blossom peak is around March 20th, lasting until mid-April! Find cherry blossom spots on our Alishan map >>

My favorite way to experience it? Take the forest train from Alishan Station through tunnels of Yoshino cherry blossoms. Get off at Zhaoping Station – it's the best spot for those iconic "railway cherry blossom" views!

From Zhaoping, I suggest following our Hiking Route A: explore Sister Ponds, Three Brothers, Four Sisters, Golden Pig Blessing, Forever Love Trees, Magnolia Garden, and Shoujhen Temple, finishing at Xianglin Service Area.

For dawn, take the Zhushan Line mini-train early in the next morning to the Zhushan observation deck. Waiting for the sunrise and watching the sea of clouds is like being in a fairyland!

5. Experience Cingjing Farm: See Blooming Cherry Blossoms in March

With an altitude ranging from 1,750 meters to 2,000 meters, this high-altitude farm is often called the "Little Switzerland of Taiwan!"

In March, the fields burst with beautiful cherry blossoms. You can feed the sheep and just soak in the stunning highland scenery.

Tip: Farm's high altitude means afternoon fog, so visit 10:00 AM–2:00 PM for best views.

6. Immerse in Taichung's Mazu Festival: Experience Taiwan's Grand Religious Event (Late March)

This is a world-class celebration! On March 27th, witness the grand start of the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage. I encourage walking with the procession for about 5km and experience "drilling under the palanquin" for blessings.

In the evening, head to Dajia Jenn Lann Temple (Mazu Temple) to see the lively martial arts and performing troupes, and grab some free "jieyuan mianxian hu" (blessing noodles)!

A Warm Reminder! Just make sure to wear comfortable, light sports shoes – you'll be doing a lot of walking!

Kaohsiung is great because it offers options whether it's sunny or rainy!

On a sunny morning, I love exploring Pier-2 Art Center's graffiti walls and watching the Great Harbor Bridge rotate.

If it's raining in the afternoon, the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum is a perfect peaceful retreat for contemplation.

In the evening, hit up Liuhe Night Market for delicious Papaya Milk and local treats.

And if you're lucky, you might catch the "Megaport Festival" music festival, with warehouse stages rocking late into the night (usually around March 28-29)!

Packing Guide: What to Wear in Taiwan in March?

For Taiwan weather in March, my golden rule for dressing is "onion-style" or "layering." You'll need to adapt based on where you are:

  • Mountains & Northern Cities: Think long sleeves, a windbreaker, long pants, and a light down jacket for chilly mornings (especially in the Taiwan mountains!).
  • Southern Coasts (e.g. Kenting): Short-sleeved t-shirts, light long pants or skirts are usually fine, but bring a light jacket or cardigan for cooler mornings and evenings.

Essentials I always pack: A foldable umbrella (a lifesaver in the cities!), a light rain jacket (for mountain hikes), non-slip shoes (especially for wet trails), a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (crucial for the sunny south!).

And my ultimate secret weapons for you? The official Taiwan Central Weather Bureau App for real-time rain forecasts to cater for the changeable Taiwan in March weather!
