Sept Weather in Taiwan: Taiwan September Itinerary (Fun & Safe)

Written by Lydia|Updated: 2025-07-23

So, you're eyeing Taiwan in September? Let me, your local pal, guide you through Taiwan weather in September.

Expect temperatures in September to still be hot (24-32°C), with high humidity and frequent rainy days, often afternoon showers. Plus, it's the peak typhoon season, with a 60%-70% chance to occur.

My advice on what to do in Taiwan in September?

Focus on our chilling city vibe (Taipei, Taichung & Tainan), food culture, and cool indoor exhibitions. And of course, the Mid-Autumn Festival is a must-experience in September in Taiwan! Also, use clear mornings to explore the outskirts!

If mountains like Alishan call to you, build in flexible time (2-3 days), and never go during a typhoon warning – safety first, always!

For purely outdoor adventures, I'd suggest October or November, when the weather is crisper and more stable.

Intrigued? Let's uncover how to make your Taiwan September itinerary fun and safe!

Visa-free Travel to China:

Taiwan Weather in September Overview: Hot, Muggy, with a Chance of Typhoons

September in Taiwan marks the end of summer, but it's still hot and humid. Average daily temperatures are 24-32°C, making it feel muggy (70%-80% humidity).

Rainfall is frequent, typically short, strong afternoon downpours lasting 1-2 hours. The good news? Morning rain probability is below 15% across Taiwan, especially in the south (Tainan, Kaohsiung) where humidity drops below 60% during the "autumn dry season," leading to sunny mornings!

For example, in September 2024, Taipei saw 70% of its rain concentrated between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM.

You'll also notice regional differences: the North/Northeast tends to be wetter and more humid, while Central/Southern Taiwan sees alternating sun and rain. High mountain areas like Alishan are much cooler, with average daily temperatures around 20°C.

Good news on the crowd front! September isn't our peak tourist season, so crowds are moderate. However, the Mid-Autumn Festival (which usually falls September) is a big deal here, so expect more local families out and about. It adds a wonderful festive vibe, though!

Regarding typhoons, there's a 60%-70% chance they might occur. Typhoons usually affect an area for 3-5 days. Eastern Taiwan (Hualien, Taitung) sees the highest risk of direct landfall.

Taipei Weather in September: Wet & Hot, Typhoon Risk High, Great for Indoor Sites & Night Markets

Avg. Temp Rainy Days Typhoon Prob. Crowing
25-31°C 14 days (afternoon thunderstorms, 70% of daily rain) High (Northeastern monsoon + terrain) ★★★☆

Taipei weather in September is hot (avg. 25-31°C, feels like 35°C, high UV) and wet (14 rainy days, afternoon thunderstorms, 360mm).

Typhoon risk is high, potentially closing mountain trails/gondola. Crowds are steady, but Daan Forest Park and Taipei 101 get busier around Mid-Autumn Festival.

Taichung Weather in September: Most Rainfall, But Rich Indoor Resources, Great Value

Avg. Temp Rainy Days Typhoon Prob. Crowing
26-31°C 16 days (afternoon rain less intense than north) Medium-High (heavy rain risk) ★★☆☆

Taichung in September is hot (26-31°C, high humidity), with 16 rainy and 12 cloudy days. Typhoon risk is medium-high, bringing heavy rain and potential localized flooding.

Yet, indoor attractions like the Science Museum remain unaffected. Tourists are fewer; accommodation is typically easy to book.

Tainan Weather in September: Relatively Dry, Best for Mid-Autumn Festival (Late Sept)

Avg. Temp Rainy Days Typhoon Prob. Crowing
25-30°C 4-8 days (brief afternoon showers, only 20% rain probability) Medium (occasional heatwaves) ★★☆☆ (slightly more for Mid-Autumn)

In Tainan, September is hot (25-30°C), with "Autumn Tiger" heat possible. It's relatively dry (4 rainy days), humidity dropping below 60%. Medium typhoon risk; post-typhoon heat can occur.

Crowds increase at Confucius Temple/Anping Fort during Mid-Autumn, but weekdays are relaxed.

Alishan Weather in September: Cool Climate, But Typhoons May Disrupt Transport

Avg. Temp Rainy Days Typhoon Prob. Crowing
15-20°C Frequent showers (bring rain gear) High (landslides/road closures) ★★★☆ (summer crowds)

Alishan weather in September is cool (15-20°C, bring jacket) with frequent showers and 80% fog (may spoil sunrise). Typhoon risk is extremely high; expect landslides, road/rail closures, and potential scenic area shutdowns. Prioritize safety.

It's busy in summer; some tourists avoid during typhoon season for city destinations.

What to Do in Taiwan in September: City Vibes, Indoor Fun, Night Markets, and the Moon Festival

1. Taipei's Indoor Gems: My Picks for Culture & Mid-Autumn Magic at NPM & Taipei 101

Looking for escapes from potential afternoon thunderstorms? You'll love these!

Spend your mornings at the National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taipei city, getting lost among incredible artifacts before the afternoon rains (remember, 70% chance after 2 PM!).

Afterward, why not head up to the Taipei 101 Observatory for stunning city views? Around Mid-Autumn Festival, it becomes even more magical for moon-gazing, completely unaffected by the weather!

My Linking Tip: These two are easily connected by MRT's Tamsui-Xinyi Line (about 40 mins). Oh, and bring a light jacket; the AC inside is always on!

This is why I adore Shilin in Taiwan in September! The main walkways have rain covers, so the food party goes on even if it's pouring.

What should you try? You simply can't miss the grilled king oyster mushrooms and dàcháng bāoxiǎocháng (sausage in glutinous rice sausage).

And around Mid-Autumn Festival, keep your eyes peeled for special seasonal stalls selling lava custard mooncakes – they are yummy!

Ready for some fresh air and stunning city views? Start your day early with a hike up Elephant Mountain (Xiangshan). It's a quick 30-minute climb to those famous rocks, offering amazing photos of Taipei 101, sometimes even shrouded in beautiful morning mist!

The trail is nicely shaded, making it quite comfortable even in Sept weather in Taiwan, and a brilliant addition to your Taiwan September itinerary.

4. Taipei Morning Route A: Dive into History at Longshan Temple & Ximending's Lively Pulse

Prefer a cultural morning? Start your day at Longshan Temple (opens 8 AM) for a serene experience.

Then, why not wander over to Ximending, especially the Red House cultural market? You'll easily beat the afternoon crowds and get to soak in different facets of Taipei's vibrant vibe!

It's a wonderful blend of history and modern energy to enjoy in Taiwan in September.

5. Beyond Taipei: My Favorite Scenic Day Trips to Yehliu, Shifen & Jiufen (Fingers Crossed for Sunshine!)

Jiufen Old Street
Jiufen Old Street

If the sun is out, this is my favorite day trip from Taipei! The route: Yehliu Geopark → Shifen Waterfall → Shifen Old Street → Jiufen Old Street.

Start early at Yehliu Geopark to see the "Queen's Head" rock before the crowds. Then, head to Shifen Waterfall (it's even more magnificent after some rain!) and release a sky lantern at Shifen Old Street. Finish your afternoon in the enchanting Jiufen Old Street, perhaps catching the sunset from a rooftop terrace.

What if a typhoon warning closes Yehliu due to Taiwan weather in September? No worries! Head to the Keelung Chaojing Park Smart Ocean Pavilion for a cool AR interactive marine exhibit instead. Always good to have a backup, right?

6. Tainan's Confucius Temple: Confucius Ceremony & Mid-Autumn Evening

Tainan Confucius Temple

If you're here around September 28th, 2025, you have a chance to witness the solemn Confucius Ceremony!

It starts super early (5-7 AM), honoring ancient traditions. You'll see students in ancient attire performing the Yi dance and the solemn "Gate Opening Ceremony." You might even get "wisdom hair" – believed to bring intelligence!

My tip: arrive before 4:30 AM as entry is limited!

During Mid-Autumn evening (6:30-9 PM), enjoy Confucian lectures, a beautiful lantern poetry gathering by Pan Pond, or a rubbing experience. Imagine the moonlight on the old banyan tree and red walls – a peaceful and profound experience unique to Taiwan in September.

If heavy rain hits, some events might be simplified or moved indoors!

I suggest a route: Anping Tree House → Anping Fort → Chihkan Tower → Tianhou Temple. Then, finish your day at Tainan's Garden Night Market for dinner!

Treat yourself to freshly grilled autumn crab or sticky rice with blue crab, paired with some "Chang'e Red Bean Soup" – perfect for a Taiwan in September evening!

9. Taichung Fengjia Night Market: Let's Feast on September Mid-Autumn Treats & More!

This is my favorite night market in Taichung, and I think you'll love it too!

Around Mid-Autumn Festival, definitely look out for special treats like "ice cream mooncakes" and refreshing "pomelo slushies."

My local tip: Try to go between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM to avoid the biggest crowds.

And here's a little secret: enter from Shanxi Road entrance to skip the main street rush! It's a delicious must-do for your Taiwan in September trip!

10. Alishan: Our Go-To Cool September Mountain Escape (But Please, Stay Safe from Typhoons!)

Alishan Giant Tree Walkway
Alishan Giant Tree Walkway
Alishan Sister Ponds
Alishan Sister Ponds

Alishan in September offers a cool escape (15-20°C), so bring a light down jacket!

My favorite Alishan hiking route A: From Zhaoping Station, explore Sister Ponds, Three Brothers, Four Sisters, Golden Pig Blessing, Forever Love Trees, Magnolia Garden, and Shoujhen Temple, finishing at Xianglin Service Area.

Route B (optional): Continue from Shoujhen Temple to the Three Generations Tree, Xianglin Elementary School, Xianglin Sacred Tree, Alishan Museum, Cihyun Temple, and the Alishan Sacred Tree Remains.

Heads up! Alishan often sees showers (so pack rain gear!) and thick fog (80% chance, could hide your sunrise). Typhoon risk is high; expect landslides/closures. Scenic area might close for your safety.

Therefore, many travelers pick cities over mountains in Taiwan in September during typhoon season.

How to Plan a Fun & Safe Taiwan September Itinerary?

  • Step 1. Time Management

For your Taiwan September itinerary, be flexible! I suggest building in 2-3 extra "flex days." Prioritize outdoor activities 6-10 AM, then indoor attractions in the afternoon, and night markets.

  • Step 2. Transportation Backups

For getting around, always have some backups! Check app "Taiwan Railways e-booking" for HSR/train updates during typhoons. MRT and YouBike are reliable in cities. Alternatively, consider Asia Odyssey Travel's car service for safety.

  • Step 3. My Itinerary Recommendations

Tamsui Fisherman's Wharf

For shorter trips within 5 days, I usually stick to urban areas. You just don't know what mountain roads or parks might be closed due to Taiwan weather in September.
