October Weather & Temperature by Region (Detailed Tips)

The best thing about October is that the weather is fantastic almost everywhere. The north feels like a perfect, mild autumn day, while the south still feels like a lovely, warm summer. It is truly the best of both worlds!

Taiwan in October Weather Avg. Temp Weather Conditions My Travel Advice
Northern Taiwan 22-27°C Mostly sunny, comfortable, much less rain Perfect for hiking & city walks, pack a light jacket for evenings
Central Taiwan 22-30°C Very sunny & dry, almost no rain Ideal for outdoor spots like Sun Moon Lake, t-shirt weather
Southern Taiwan 23-31°C Warm & sunny, feels like a perfect summer Beach weather! Pack summer clothes & sun protection
Eastern Taiwan 22-28°C Mostly clear, beautiful views, can be breezy Great for coastal cycling, a windproof layer is smart
Mountain Areas 10-20°C (can be cooler in the morning) Crisp & cool, clear skies, big temperature drop Bring a warm jacket, especially for sunrise viewing

Northern Taiwan (Taipei, Jiufen): The Perfect Autumn Vibe

This is what perfect autumn feels like. In Taipei and the north, the horrible summer humidity is gone. The air feels fresh and comfortable.

Daily temperatures are usually between 22-27°C (72-81°F). It is warm enough to walk around in a t-shirt during the day. In the evenings, it might cool down a little, so having a light jacket is a good idea. It rains much, much less than in the summer. It is the best time for walking around the city for hours.

Central Taiwan (Taichung, Sun Moon Lake): Sunny and Super Dry

Central Taiwan is a dream in October. You can almost forget about rain here. The days are very sunny, dry, and warm.

The average temperature is around 22-30°C (72-86°F). Because there is so little rain, it is the best month to visit outdoor places like Sun Moon Lake. You will be very comfortable exploring everything. You will mostly be in a t-shirt, even in the evening.

Southern Taiwan (Tainan, Kaohsiung, Kenting): Endless Summer Days

Welcome to the sunshine zone! While the north is cooling down, the south is still holding on to a perfect summer. It is warm, sunny, and beautifully dry.

Expect daily temperatures between 23-31°C (73-88°F). If you want to go to the beach, October is a fantastic time to visit Kenting. The water is still warm and the sun is not as strong as in July. Just pack your summer clothes and sunscreen, and you are ready to go.

Eastern Taiwan (Hualien, Taitung): Beautiful and Clear

The views of the mountains and the ocean are amazing this month. The weather in the east is usually beautiful and clear, very similar to the north.

Temperatures are pleasant, around 22-28°C (72-82°F). It can get a little breezy along the coast, so a light windproof jacket is great to have, especially if you are cycling. It is a wonderful time to visit, but always check the status of Taroko Gorge if there has been any recent rain. Ready to plan your hike? Mountain Areas (Alishan, Hehuanshan): Crisp, Cool and Clear

This is where you will feel the cold! When you go up into the mountains, the temperature drops a lot. Daily temperatures can be from 10-20°C (50-68°F). The mornings and nights are especially chilly.

The good news is that the skies are often very clear. This means you have a great chance of seeing a beautiful sunrise over a sea of clouds in places like Alishan. You must pack a warm jacket or a fleece. You will definitely need it.

Best Places to Visit in October

1. Hike Elephant Mountain for That Perfect Taipei 101 Shot

Taipei 101

Bogd Khaan Palace Museum

If you want that amazing photo of the Taipei 101 skyline, this is the time to get it. The summer heat and haze are gone, so the skies in October are often super clear. The hike is short, only about 20 minutes up, but the view is incredible.

My personal tip is to start hiking around 4:30 PM. That way, you can see the city in the daylight, watch the beautiful sunset, and then see all the city lights turn on. It is three views for the price of one hike! Just bring some water and wear comfortable shoes.

2. Silvergrass on Yangmingshan Ridges

If you love hiking and want to stay close to Taipei, you should go to Yangmingshan. Towards the end of October, something magical starts to happen. The tops of the mountains start to get covered in waves of beautiful silvergrass.

It sways in the wind and looks amazing against a clear blue sky. A great place to see it is on the Qingtiangang Trail. Just a friendly heads-up, the silvergrass is just beginning. It gets even better in November, but you will definitely see the beautiful start of it in late October.

3. Cycle Around Sun Moon Lake Under Sunny Skies

Sun Moon Lake Cycling

Sun Moon Lake is beautiful all year, but it is a real dream in October. The weather is warm, dry, and sunny, which is perfect for being outdoors. You can rent a bike and ride on a path that CNN called one of the most beautiful in the world.

The path is mostly flat and very easy to ride. My advice is to go on a weekday if you can. It will be much quieter, and you will feel like you have the whole beautiful lake to yourself. It is so peaceful.

4. Chishang Golden Rice Fields

If you visit near the end of October, you have to go to Taitung in the east. The rice fields in the Chishang valley turn a beautiful golden yellow right before the harvest. It looks like a sea of gold, and it is one of the most beautiful things you can see in Taiwan.

The best way to see it is by bike. You can rent one and ride along the famous Mr. Brown Avenue. It is a path that goes right through the fields with no telephone poles in sight. My tip is to buy a famous Chishang lunchbox, find a nice spot, and have a perfect picnic.

Where Begins the Autumn Foliage in Taiwan in October?

Taipingshan

Hike to Mt. Datashan
Hike to Mt. Datashan

October is when the fall color season is just waking up. If you want to see the very first red leaves, you need to go way up high to Hehuanshan. It is over 3,000 meters high, so it is the earliest place to see colors.

Around the middle of October, the leaves start to turn a beautiful red. But seriously, it gets very cold up there, maybe below 10°C, so you must pack a warm jacket! It can also get foggy, so it is best to go in the morning.

Another amazing place, and my personal favorite for October, is Taipingshan. It is not just about red leaves here. They have special purple-leaf maples that turn a deep red. But the real star is the Beech Tree Trail. In late October, the leaves on these trees turn a beautiful golden yellow.

Your best choice for seeing red leaves in October is Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area. It is one of the first places in Taiwan to show off its autumn beauty.

If you are visiting near the end of the month, Wuling Farm is another great choice. The colors start to change here in late October. They have different kinds of maple trees, so you see lots of different colors.

A place called Aowanda is famous as the "home of maple leaves," but its best colors are really in December. And if you are staying in Taipei and do not have much time, Yangmingshan has some color at the very end of the month, but it is just small patches here and there.

Which Festivals to Celebrate in October in Taiwan

You've picked a fantastic month to visit! October is packed with fun events and big holidays. You will get to see how we celebrate, eat special food, and join some really cool festivals.

Mid-Autumn Festival Oct 6

Pride Parade in Taiwan
Pride Parade in Taiwan

This is one of our biggest holidays! The Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, is all about family getting together. You will see people having barbecues on the sidewalks everywhere. It is a time for giving thanks and watching the full moon, which is supposed to be the brightest of the year.

The most important food is the mooncake. It is a small, round pastry that can be sweet or savory. My advice is to try a classic one with lotus seed paste and a salted egg yolk inside. It sounds strange, but it is delicious!

A great place to enjoy the evening is at a big park, like Da'an Forest Park in Taipei, where you can see lots of families out enjoying the moon.

Taipei Pride Oct 25

Taipei Pride is the biggest LGBTQ+ pride parade in all of East Asia. It is a huge, colorful, and happy celebration of love and equality. The parade route usually goes through the main streets of Taipei, ending with a big stage show with performers and speakers.

Taipei Jazz Festival Oct 22-26

If you love music, you are in luck. The Taipei Jazz Festival happens every October, and it is a fantastic event. For several days, you can listen to amazing jazz musicians from Taiwan and all over the world.

The best part is that many of the concerts are free! They are held outdoors in parks, like Da'an Forest Park.

You can just bring a blanket, sit on the grass, and enjoy world-class music under the stars. It is a very relaxed and wonderful way to spend an evening. Check their official website closer to the date for the exact schedule and locations.

What to Wear in Taiwan in October

Packing for October is easy because the weather is amazing! During the day and early autumn at night. You can wear t-shirts and shorts when the sun is out. But it gets a little cooler in the evening, so my best advice is to always bring a light jacket or a cardigan with you.

If you plan to go up into the high mountains in Taiwan, you need to pack for the cold. It can be very chilly, especially in t he morning and at night. You must bring a warm jacket, like a fleece or a light down jacket.

October is one of the best month to visit Taiwan. It is sunny and comfortable, not too hot and not too rainy. It is the kind of weather that just makes you want to be outside all day.

You get to experience so much. You can join in on huge, happy festivals, see the first autumn leaves in the mountains, or just explore the cities in total comfort. There is something for everyone.

Yes, it is a popular month and you need to plan a little for the holidays. But that just proves how wonderful it is to be here in October. With a little bit of booking in advance, you are setting yourself up for the perfect trip.
