Is April a Good Time to Visit Taiwan?

Kaohsiung Fo Guang Shan

Yangmingshan

April offers some of the best weather of the year, warm but not too hot, and mostly dry. The average temperature across the island is usually 21-27℃(69–81°F). Just be smart and plan around the major public holiday at the very beginning of the month.

City High / Low Temp (°C) Rainy Days Sun Hours (per day) Humidity UV Index
Taipei 26°C / 19°C ~15 days ~3-4 ~78% 11
Taichung 28°C / 20°C ~12 days ~5-9 ~78% 12
Kaohsiung 29°C / 22°C ~9 days ~5-6 ~75% 11+
Hualien 26°C / 20°C ~17 days ~5 ~73% 12

Crowd Level:

  • April 1-7: VERY HIGH (This is a major holiday long weekend, so travel is very busy).
  • Rest of April: MODERATE (It's a popular month, but much calmer after the holiday).

How Hot Is It in Taiwan April? Average Temperature & Humidity by Region

Region Day °C / °F Night °C / °F Humidity
North – Taipei, Keelung 27 / 81 19 / 66 ~78 %
Central – Taichung, Sun Moon Lake 26 / 79 18 / 64 ~75 %
South – Tainan, Kaohsiung, Kenting 29 / 84 22 / 72 ~73 %

High Mountains – Alishan, Hehuanshan 15 / 59 7 / 45 ~60 %

How hot does it actually get in Taiwan in April? Think of it this way: the north is having a mild spring, while the south is already enjoying an early summer. And if you go up into the mountains, it's a whole different story—you'll need a proper jacket!

North (Taipei, Keelung) — taipei weather in april: Days feel spring-warm, about 27 °C. Mornings can be cool, so a light jacket helps.

Central (Taichung, Sun Moon Lake): Central Taiwan is drier. Taichung has bright skies and only a few showers. Highs hit 26 °C; nights drop to 18 °C. Sun Moon Lake is a touch cooler and fog rolls in at dawn.

South (Tainan, Kaohsiung, Kenting): Here it feels like early summer. Afternoons reach 29 °C, and sea breezes make evenings pleasant. Humidity is lower than in Taipei, so sweat dries fast.

East Coast (Hualien, Taitung): Daytime is about 26 °C, but clouds gather over the gorges. Humidity is high.

High Mountains (Alishan, Hehuanshan): Big drop! Highs hover near 15 °C; nights can slip to 5 °C or lower. Frost is still possible on Hehuanshan before sunrise.

Does It Rain a Lot? Taiwan April Rainfall & Sunshine Hours

The good news is that you're visiting just before the heavy "plum rain" season starts in mid-May. So, you'll miss the really intense downpours.

In April, the rain is usually more of a light drizzle or a passing shower, especially in Taipei on the East Coast. It's rarely the kind of rain that ruins your whole day. The south is much, much sunnier than the north. You'll get way more sunshine hours there.

Region Rain mm / in Rainy Days* Sun Hours / Day
North – Taipei, Keelung 150 mm / 6 in 11 3
Central – Taichung, Sun Moon Lake 70 mm / 3 in 6 5
South – Tainan, Kaohsiung, Kenting 65 mm / 2.6 in 4 6
East Coast – Hualien, Taitung 80 mm / 3 in 8 5
Offshore – Penghu Islands 80 mm / 3 in 8 6

Taiwan April Travel Guide: Best Things to Do in April

April isn't just about good weather; it's one of the most magical months to be in Taiwan. Nature is waking up, and there are some truly special cultural events you can only experience this time of year.

See Magical Fireflies in the Mountains (Alishan & Sun Moon Lake)

Taiwan Firefly

This is the number one reason to visit Taiwan's mountains in April. It is the absolute peak season for fireflies.

When you standing in a cool, dark forest, and suddenly, thousands of tiny green-gold lights begin to float and dance all around you. it’s like the entire forest is alive with silent, twinkling stars.

The Famous Spot: Alishan Forest Recreation Area. This is the classic choice, with well-organized tours and huge numbers of fireflies. It's famous for a reason.

Great Alternatives (Fewer Crowds): If you're not going to Alishan, you can still see them! Check out the areas around Xitou Nature Education Area or near Sun Moon Lake in Nantou County. The countryside in Hualien also has amazing spots if you book a local tour.

Walk on a Fantasy "Green Carpet" at Laomei Reefs

Laomei Reefs, New Taipei City

This is a true limited-time offer from nature. This vibrant green algae only grows on these volcanic rocks for about two months a year, from late March to early May. April is the absolute sweet spot when the color is at its most intense and brilliant.

You'll find this incredible spot on the North Coast of Taiwan, in Shimen District, New Taipei City. It's an easy and perfect day trip from Taipei.

You can take a bus from the Danshui MRT station, but my top recommendation is to rent a scooter or car for the day to really explore the stunning coastline at your own pace.

Witness the Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage

Tainan Grand Mazu Temple

The Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage is one of the world's largest religious festivals, and its date is set according to the lunar calendar each year, almost always falling in April. You are witnessing a living, breathing piece of Taiwanese culture.

This is a moving festival, not a single place. The 9-day procession travels over 340km through Central Taiwan (Taichung, Changhua, Yunlin, and Chiayi).

You don't walk for 9 days. The best way is to check the official schedule online (search "Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage schedule 2025").

Then, pick a city to see it. The start and end at Zhenlan Temple in Dajia, Taichung, are spectacular. Or, see it pass through Xiluo in Yunlin, where the procession crosses the dramatic Xiluo Bridge.

Pick Your Own Calla Lilies in Yangmingshan

Yangmingshan Zhuzihu
Yangmingshan Zhuzihu

This is the official Calla Lily Festival season in Yangmingshan. The entire valley of Zhuzihu is transformed into a sea of pure white, elegant flowers. The specific spot you want is a valley inside the park called Zhuzihu (竹子湖).

Zhuzihu is a valley that contains over 13 hectares of calla lily fields, accounting for more than 80% of Taiwan's entire production. you need to know that it's split into two main sections:

The Lower Lake Area (下湖, Xiàhú): This is the more commercial area you'll encounter first, right by the main bus stops and the Zhuzihu Police Station. It's filled with many restaurants and smaller, easily accessible "pick-your-own" farms. It's convenient but can feel crowded.

The Top Lake Area (頂湖, Dǐnghú): This is where you want to go for the best views. To get here, you continue up the main road for another 5-10 minutes on foot. This area features the largest, most expansive, and unbroken fields of calla lilies.

There are dedicated walking paths that loop around the fields, giving you those stunning postcard photos of a sea of white flowers with the mountains in the background.

Escape to the Cool Mountain Farms

Wuling Farm
Wuling Farm

The weather in the mountains in April is simply perfect. The winter chill is gone, and the intense summer heat hasn't arrived yet. The grass is at its greenest, and the air is crisp and fresh. It's the ideal month for hiking and enjoying the views.

Wuling Farm: Wuling Farm is a beautiful place high in the mountains. In April, you can see amazing flower fields and wide, green meadows. It's a great place to enjoy nature, walk on trails, and breathe the fresh mountain air.

Cingjing Farm: Want to feel like you're in Europe? Visit Cingjing Farm! It's famous for its rolling green hills and cute sheep that walk around freely. The weather in spring is lovely, and the grass is bright green.

You can walk on a skywalk for amazing views of the mountains. You can also watch a sheep show. Ready to plan your hike? Find the perfect trail in our Guide to Taiwan's Best Mountains.

Enjoy the Peace of Sun Moon Lake

Sun Moon Lake

I call April the "Goldilocks month" for Sun Moon Lake—it's not too hot, not too cold, it's just right. You can be outdoors all day without the oppressive humidity of summer. The lake is often misty and mysterious in the morning and bright and beautiful in the afternoon.

The best way to experience the lake is to get on it or go around it. Hop on one of the ferries that go between the three main piers. It gives you a wonderful perspective of the lake and its surrounding mountains.

The bike path around Sun Moon Lake has been called one of the most beautiful in the world. You don't have to do the whole thing. Just rent a bike for an hour or two and enjoy a flat, scenic ride right along the water's edge.

or the best views, take the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway up to the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village (another great place to visit!). You'll get a stunning bird's-eye view of the entire lake.

Eat Fresh Spring Bamboo Shoots

You have to eat what's in season! April is the peak harvest season for spring bamboo, which is completely different from the stuff you get in a can. It's when they are at their most tender, sweet, and delicious.

Look for it on the menu at any local restaurant or food stall. It's a true taste of Taiwanese spring.

My favorite way is the simplest: a cold bamboo shoot salad (涼筍), served with Taiwanese-style sweet mayonnaise. You'll also find it in a hearty bamboo shoot and chicken soup (竹筍雞湯) or quickly stir-fried with meat. For a guided culinary adventure, join the Taiwan Food Tour from Asia Odyssey Travel.

What to Wear in Taiwan in April (Packing List)

Alishan Sea of Clouds

Alishan Forest Park

The key for Taiwan in April is layers, because the weather loves to change its mind.

Your go-to outfit for most places, especially in cities like Taipei, will be a T-shirt and comfortable pants. Always keep a light jacket with you. You'll need it for the strong air conditioning indoors and for cooler evenings.

Now, for the coldest places like the mountains of Alishan or Cingjing Farm, you must add a warmer layer. Pack a fleece or a proper sweater. It gets surprisingly cold up there, especially at night when you might be looking for fireflies.

On the other hand, if you're going south to places like Kaohsiung or Kenting, you can do the opposite. You can probably leave the heavier sweater behind.

Key Public Holidays & Crowds

This something really important for your April trip: public holidays. You need to know about this because it can change your travel plans.

There's a major holiday for Children's Day and Tomb-Sweeping Day, usually around April 4th. This creates a long weekend, and it is one of the busiest times of the year to travel.

The biggest problem is that trains and buses between cities will be completely full. My best advice for you is to book your train tickets weeks in advance if you have to travel during this time.

After this busy holiday weekend, the rest of April becomes much calmer and easier to get around.

Is It Expensive to Travel to Japan in April?

For most of the month, the prices are pretty reasonable. It's shoulder season, which means it's not the cheapest time of the year, but it's definitely not the most expensive either. You can find good deals on hotels and flights.

However, you need to be very careful about the first week of April. There is a major public holiday for Tomb-Sweeping Day and Children's Day. Hotel prices can increase a lot, especially in popular tourist spots.

if you can, try to plan your trip for the middle or end of April.

Yes, absolutely! Kenting is in the far south of Taiwan, where it's already warm and beach-ready. The weather is usually great for swimming and enjoying the ocean. So pack your swimsuit for sure.

Does it snow in Alishan in April?

No, it does not snow in the mountains of Alishan in April. Any chance of snow is long gone by this time of year. But please remember, it is still very cool up there, especially at night. You will definitely need a warm jacket.

How crowded is Taipei during the Qingming holiday?

This is a great question. During the Qingming holiday weekend at the start of the month, many people actually leave Taipei to go to their hometowns. So, the city can feel a bit less busy in some ways. However, the big tourist spots and parks will be very crowded with families. The real crowds are on the trains and buses leaving or entering the city.

What's the best place to see leftover cherry blossoms?

You will be arriving at the very end of the cherry blossom season. Most of the flowers at lower elevations will be gone. Your best and most famous option is to go high up into the mountains. Alishan is the perfect place to try and catch the last beautiful cherry blossoms of the year.
