Zhangjiajie Weather in October: Golden Autumn & Golden Week

Written by Felicia|Updated: 2025-10-14

October is one of the most beautiful and comfortable months to visit Zhangjiajie. As autumn paints the sandstone peaks in golden and red hues, the air turns crisp and refreshing — perfect for hiking, photography, and outdoor adventures. The average temperature ranges from 15°C (59°F) in the morning to around 25°C (77°F) during the day, making it pleasantly cool without being cold.

The skies are clearer after the summer rains, and the famous "sea of clouds" often appears at sunrise in Yuanjiajie or Tianmen Mountain. Crowds thin out after the early-October Golden Week, giving you quieter trails and cleaner photo moments.

With Asia Odyssey Travel, you'll enjoy the best of October's weather — from misty mornings to glowing sunsets — while our local guides handle all the planning, transport, and timing to make your Zhangjiajie autumn trip seamless and unforgettable.

Visa-free Travel to China:

Starting December 2024, transit travelers from 54 countries can stay for up to 10 days without a visa. Better yet, visitors from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and several Asian countries enjoy 30-day visa-free stays through 2025.

US, UK, and Canadian passport holders can visit for 6 days visa-free. Learn more details about How to Visit China Without a Visa in 2025>>

Is October a Good Time to Visit Zhangjiajie?

Absolutely yes — Zhangjiajie in October might just be the most beautiful version of the park you'll ever see… if you visit after the chaos of the first week.

Think of October as a month of two halves:

  • The first week is the Golden Week holiday, a nationwide travel frenzy where every scenic spot in China is packed shoulder to shoulder.
  • The rest of the month? Pure bliss. Cool air, clear skies, golden leaves, and mountain views so sharp they look photoshopped.

From mid to late October, Zhangjiajie weather hits that perfect sweet spot — dry, sunny, and comfortably cool. The fog clears up, making it the best time of year for panoramic views of the Avatar mountains.

The forests around Yuanjiajie and Tianzishan start glowing with reds, oranges, and yellows, creating postcard-perfect scenery everywhere you turn.

If you dream of standing on a glass bridge, hiking through fiery autumn colors, and taking photos of endless sandstone peaks under blue skies — October in Zhangjiajie is calling your name.

CRITICAL WARNING: The National Day Holiday (October 1–7)

This part deserves a big red warning sign — because Golden Week in China is no joke.

The first week of October is the National Day Holiday, and it's the single busiest travel period in the entire country. Millions of domestic tourists head out at the same time, and Zhangjiajie — being one of China's top natural attractions — becomes a human sea.

Here's what that means in real life:

  • Unimaginable crowds: Every viewpoint, bus, cable car, and trail is jam-packed.
  • Endless waiting: Lines for the Bailong Elevator or Tianzishan Cable Car can easily stretch to 3–4 hours.
  • Soaring prices: Flights and hotels double or even triple. Many of the best ones sell out months in advance.

Our Honest Advice

If you take one thing from this guide, make it this:

Do NOT visit Zhangjiajie from October 1st to 7th.

No matter how beautiful the park is, you'll barely see it behind the crowds.

If you must go during that week, book everything well ahead, join a guided tour to skip some lines, and brace yourself for a very busy experience. But trust us — waiting until after October 8th is worth every bit of patience.

What's the Weather Like in Zhangjiajie in October?

Once the Golden Week madness fades, Zhangjiajie weather in October becomes downright perfect. Sunshine returns, humidity drops, and the air turns crisp and clear. It's officially autumn in the mountains — warm by day, cool by night, and ideal for hiking.

Temperature: Warm Days, Chilly Nights

  • Average temperature: 15°C to 22°C (59°F – 72°F)
  • Daytime: Usually between 18°C and 25°C, with pleasant warmth for hiking.
  • Mornings, nights & mountain tops: It can dip to 10°C–15°C, so expect a noticeable chill, especially on Tianzishan or Yuanjiajie.

It's the kind of weather where you'll enjoy a T-shirt at noon but reach for a jacket at sunset.

Rain: Mostly Gone, But Keep an Umbrella

October marks the shift from rainy to dry season. Showers become rare — usually short and light when they happen.

  • Rainy days: 7–10 for the month.
  • Early October: Slightly higher chance of drizzle from typhoon tails or cold fronts.
  • Mid-to-late October: Dry, stable, and mostly sunny — perfect hiking weather.

Visibility: The Best of the Year

This is when Zhangjiajie shines brightest. The air is clean and dry, offering the clearest views of the quartz-sandstone pillars all year.

  • Expect crystal-clear mornings and vivid sunsets.
  • Cool mornings often bring mist or sea clouds, adding an ethereal layer to the already jaw-dropping scenery.

You might even get both — misty, dreamlike peaks at sunrise and sharp, high-definition views by noon.
