The Best Route: A Two-Step Train Journey via Changsha

The most popular and straightforward way to travel from Zhangjiajie to Huangshan is by high-speed train with a single transfer in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province. This option is fast, reliable, and easy to navigate — even for first-time visitors to China.

地图

Step 1: Zhangjiajie → Changsha (Approx. 3–3.5 hours)

Your journey begins at Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, located about 10 km from downtown.

High-speed trains run throughout the day, departing roughly every 1–2 hours.

The ride to Changsha South Railway Station takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, whisking you across the scenic Hunan countryside in smooth comfort.

  • Tickets: ¥166–228 (second), ¥268–377 (first), ¥300–745 (business)

Traveler Tip: Try to book a morning train from Zhangjiajie to give yourself plenty of time for the transfer and still reach Huangshan by evening.

Step 2: Changsha South → Huangshan North (Approx. 4–4.5 hours)

Once you arrive in Changsha South, you'll transfer to a second high-speed train heading east to Huangshan North Railway Station in Huangshan, Anhui Province.

The connection is typically smooth — most trains allow at least 30–60 minutes for transfer, giving you time to grab a snack or stretch your legs.

  • Duration: About 3.5 to 4 hours
  • Tickets: ¥366–391 (second), ¥602-632 (first), ¥711-1230 (business)
  • Frequency: 4 daily departures, with most trains scheduled in the afternoon

G1398 15:57 19:51 3h 54m Great afternoon connection
G2186 16:59 20:32 3h 33m Fastest, also afternoon
G1184 11:28 19:15 7h 47m Detours via Wuhan, not recommended

Traveler Note: Avoid train G1184. It makes a long detour through Wuhan and takes nearly 8 hours, which defeats the purpose of choosing high-speed rail.

How to Arrange Your Trains?

If you're only transferring in Changsha (no stopover):

Book a morning train from Zhangjiajie West to Changsha South. This way, you'll reach Changsha before 3:00 pm, giving you enough time to comfortably catch one of the two afternoon departures to Huangshan (15:57 or 16:59).

If you plan to stay 1–2 nights in Changsha:

Honestly, this is a wise choice. Changsha is one of China's top foodie cities—famous for its spicy street snacks like stinky tofu, kouwei xia (spicy crayfish), and fried rice noodles. Beyond food, you can explore cultural gems like Orange Isle (Juzizhou) and the historic Yuelu Academy.

In this case, you can take any train from Zhangjiajie to Changsha, then leave for Huangshan the next day. Just remember to book your ticket in advance and avoid the detour train G1184.

3. Alternative Route: Two-Step Train Journey via Shangrao (Wangxian Valley)

For those with extra time, the Shangrao route is another option.

Step 1: Take a high-speed train from Zhangjiajie to Shangrao

There is only one direct high-speed train per day linking Zhangjiajie and Shangrao.

Departure Time Arrival Time Travel Time Notes
G2760 7:28 13:39 6h 11m The only direct daily option
  • Tickets: ¥564 (second), ¥924 (first), ¥1903 (business)

Step 2: Continue from Shangrao to Huangshan North

From Shangrao, trains to Huangshan North Station are frequent and fast. With 20+ departures daily, the journey takes just 40–60 minutes.

  • Tickets: ¥75 (second), ¥126 (first), ¥235 (business)

Why transfer at Shangrao?

Shangrao is the gateway to Wangxian Valley, a beautiful hidden gem. Nestled among cliffs and misty peaks, this valley is home to ancient cliffside villages and has a magical, almost “xianxia” (Chinese fantasy) atmosphere at night.

Spending one evening here lets you soak in a completely different side of China's mountain culture before continuing on to the iconic Yellow Mountains.

Do keep in mind that Wangxian Valley is about 1 hour by car from Shangrao Station, so you'll need a short transfer. Still, for travelers who crave both efficiency and discovery, this detour is worth it.

Why Other Options Are Not Recommended

When planning the trip from Zhangjiajie to Huangshan, you might wonder if flights, long-distance buses, or slower trains are worth considering. In reality, they aren't great choices for most international travelers. Here's why:

Flights

At first glance, flying sounds faster, but there are no direct flights between Zhangjiajie and Huangshan. You'd have to transfer in a major hub like Shanghai or Guangzhou, which adds hours of waiting.

Once you factor in airport check-in, security checks, and transit from the airport to the city, flying often ends up slower and more expensive than the high-speed train.

Buses & Slow Trains

Yes, it's technically possible, but prepare for a long, bumpy, and confusing ride. Buses take 10+ hours, are far less comfortable, and usually require multiple transfers.

Slow trains are even worse—overnight journeys with limited amenities and complex connections. For most travelers, these options simply don't make sense when high-speed trains are so much smoother, faster, and easier.

Verdict: Stick with the high-speed train. It's the best balance of speed, comfort, and reliability, making your Zhangjiajie to Huangshan journey stress-free.
