The Lay of the Land: Zhangjiajie City vs. Wulingyuan Town

This is the most important distinction to understand when planning your trip. Getting this right will save you hours of travel time and ensure you're staying in the right place for your adventure.

Take a look at our Regional Map below. You'll see two main areas where travelers stay.

Zhangjiajie City (Yongding District)

This is the main transportation hub. It's where you will find the Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) and the main train station.

Its star attraction is Tianmen Mountain, famous for its incredible "Heaven's Door" arch and the world's longest cable car ride, which starts right in the city.

The Catch: The city is a 45- to 60-minute drive away from the main entrance of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (the "Avatar" mountains). If you stay here, you will have a long commute every day to see the famous pillars.

Wulingyuan Town

Wulingyuan Town Map

This is your Zhangjiajie adventure base camp. Wulingyuan is a smaller, charming town built specifically for tourism.

It sits right at the main entrance to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. You can literally walk from your hotel to the park gates.

It's also closer to other key attractions like the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, Baofeng Lake, and Huanglong Cave.

Our Expert Advice: For 9 out of 10 travelers, we strongly recommend staying in Wulingyuan Town. You'll be right in the heart of the action, have a huge variety of restaurants and hotels to choose from, and most importantly, you'll maximize your time exploring the parks instead of sitting in a car.

Stay in Zhangjiajie City for your first or last night only if you have an early flight or want to explore Tianmen Mountain immediately upon arrival.
