Shanghai Location Map: Where Is Shanghai on the Map?

Shanghai Location on Map
Shanghai Location on Map

If you look at a map of China, you'll find Shanghai (31.14° N, 121.48° E) sitting proudly on the country's east coast, right where the Yangtze River meets the East China Sea.

For travelers, Shanghai's location is especially convenient. From here, famous destinations such as Suzhou and Hangzhou are less than an hour away by high-speed train, making Shanghai a perfect starting point for exploring eastern China.

Shanghai City Map: The Layout of Shanghai City

The large base map shows the full administrative area of Shanghai Municipality, a provincial-level region.

On this map, you can see major landmarks in the outer suburbs, including the two international airports—Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport—as well as attractions such as Shanghai Disneyland and the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao. The main city center is highlighted with a red box.

The mini-map zooms in on this central area. The key feature shaping the city is the Huangpu River, which runs through the center and divides Shanghai into two main areas.

On the west side of the Huangpu River is Puxi, the historic part of the city. This is where you'll find many of Shanghai's classic neighborhoods and famous landmarks, including the Bund, lively shopping streets, and traditional districts.

Across the river to the east is Pudong, Shanghai's modern financial district. Here the skyline is filled with futuristic skyscrapers, including icons like the Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl Tower.

Notes
  • Most first-time visitors spend a lot of time exploring Puxi because it offers a mix of history, culture, and city life.
  • Pudong represents the city’s rapid development and global business energy. Getting between Puxi and Pudong is easy — cross a bridge, take a tunnel, or hop on the metro, which runs frequently under the river.

We went on the 13 Day relaxing China Tour with Yangtze River cruise. It was very enjoyable and in 13 days we saw a lot of China.Asia Odyssey booked our travel and accommodation in China. The accommodation was fine, usually 3 to 4 star hotels. The format of the tour made it enjoyable, we'd travel independently in China, stay at a hotel with other Asia Odyssey tourists and travel with them in a small group for a few days, everyone would then go their separate ways and at the next location we'd meet another small group. We met some very interesting people. The organisation from Asia Odyssey was flawless. We were always met by a driver and English speaking guide at airports and railway stations, the guides themselves were knowledgeable and polite. Mandy, our contact at Asia Odyssey was excellent, with clear information and assistance and she was always available during the time we were on holiday.I thoroughly recommend Asia Odyssey travel. read more
