Sichuan Location Map: Where is Sichuan on China Map

Sichuan Province Located on south western China Map
Sichuan Province Located on south western China Map

On a standard map of China, Sichuan is located in the southwestern interior. It is not on the coast; instead, it is landlocked, acting as a massive gateway between the flat eastern plains and the high Tibetan Plateau to the west.

Its capital, Chengdu, sits in the heart of the renowned Sichuan Basin, a lush area famous for being the home of giant pandas.

Sichuan province is celebrated globally for its dramatic landscapes, ranging from snow-capped mountains in the west to rolling rivers in the east, as well as its rich cultural heritage and world-famous spicy cuisine, including Sichuan hotpot.

Sichuan Province and surrounding Province on China Map

Geographically, Sichuan is surrounded by diverse regions that define its character.

To the west lies the Tibet Autonomous Region, marking the edge of the Himalayas. To the east, it borders the major municipality of Chongqing. The province is also flanked by Yunnan and Guizhou to the south, and Shaanxi, Gansu, and Qinghai to the north and northwest.

This unique position makes Sichuan a crucial hub for travel between central China and the ethnic minority regions of the southwest and west.

Frequently Asked Questions
Expand All
When is the best time to visit? +
Overall, April–June and September–October offer mild weather. Western Sichuan (Yading, Kangding) is best June–September for green grasslands and accessible passes; winter brings snow closures. Jiuzhaigou is great year-round: autumn (Oct) for colorful leaves, winter for ice waterfalls and fewer crowds. Panzhihua shines in winter (Nov–Feb) with sunshine and warmth.
Do I need a permit for Western Sichuan or Tibet areas? +
Western Sichuan (Garze/Aba) generally requires no permit for standard spots like Kangding, Litang, Jiuzhaigou, or Yading. Tibet Autonomous Region, however, mandates a Tibet Travel Permit if your route crosses into Tibet beyond Sichuan’s border.
How many days do I need? +
Chengdu city + food: 2 days. Classic highlights (Chengdu + Leshan + Emei + Jiuzhaigou): 5–6 days. Western Sichuan Grand Loop (G318 Highway): 7–10 days minimum.
Where is the best place to see Pandas? +
Chengdu Research Base is best for convenience and seeing cubs. Wolong (Shenshuping), Dujiangyan, or Bifengxia offer a more natural, semi-wild habitat experience. All are doable as day trips from Chengdu.
Is the food too spicy? Can I find non-spicy options? +
Sichuan cuisine is famous for Mala (numbing spice), but non-spicy options exist. Look for dishes like "Tomato Egg Soup," "Sweet Corn Ribs," or request "Wei La" (little spice) or "Bu La" (no spice). Dumplings and noodles often have non-spicy versions.
What about altitude sickness in Western Sichuan? +
Many areas (Yading, Litang, Huanglong) exceed 3,500m (11,500ft). Ascend gradually, avoid strenuous exercise on day one, stay hydrated, and consider bringing oxygen cans (available locally). If severe headaches or nausea occur, descend immediately.

My first time booking a customised tour to China (Beijing, Xi an, Hangzhou, Suzhou and Shanghai) with Asia Odyssey. I'm very glad that my tour agent Issac. He was very responsive and also accommodative to my requests. We started with three persons in our group and added to five. He immediately made the adjustments. Also when our flight timing was changed, Issac readjusted our itinerary to cater to our timing. Throughout the trip, Issac check in on our progress, well-being whenever we moved to a new town. A special shoutout to our Beijing’s local guide, Helen. Besides being knowledgeable in local culture and the country's rich history, she is an observant and dedicated lady. Helen understands the likings of my teenager and recommends local snacks and souvenirs that are special in the area. We also had an opportunity to visit a local resident at their residence and spent an amazing time with them. I would also like to thank the other two local guides Candy and Terry for their sharing and hospitality. Asia Odyssey has definitely made my trip a great and memorable one. read more
