Hanoi Old Quarter Map: Navigate Hanoi's Old Quarter with Map

Hanoi Old Quarter Map
Hanoi Old Quarter Map

Let's zoom in on your Hanoi map until you see the Old Quarter. This area is north of Hoan Kiem Lake. It covers about 1 square kilometer, sitting right between the lake and the Long Bien Bridge.

It's easy to get lost in its many winding streets, often called the "36 Streets" because it's like a maze! That's why this map of the Old Quarter is really needed. You should plan for at least 3-4 hours for a decent wander through the Old Quarter.

North End

  • Dong Xuan Market: At the northern end of the quarter, is Hanoi's largest covered market. Built by the French in 1889.
  • Bach Ma Temple: Just south of the market, you'll find Bach Ma Temple, the oldest temple in the Old Quarter, dedicated to Hanoi's guardian spirit.
  • 1 Hang Manh street: Try bun cha at 1 Hang Manh street - Obama's favorite!

Middle Section

Ta Hien Street, nicknamed "Beer Corner" (in the center of the quarter), comes alive at night with tiny plastic stools and tables spilling onto the street. It's famous for bia hoi (fresh beer) and street food, offering the quintessential Hanoi evening experience.

And Visit Bach Ma Temple (oldest in Hanoi, built in 1010).

South Side (Closest to the Lake)

Hang Gai Street (Silk Street) in the southern part of the quarter showcases traditional Vietnamese textiles and crafts. Nearby, Hang Bac (Silver Street) still houses many jewelry craftsmen, continuing a tradition that's centuries old.

Near the southern edge, don't miss the bustling Hang Be Market, smaller than Dong Xuan but more authentic and less touristy. It's especially lively in the early morning when locals shop for fresh produce.

Hanoi Airport, Railway Station & Accommodation Area

Hanoi Travel Map
  • Airport (45-90 min): Noi Bai International Airport lies about 45 kilometers north of the city center.
  • Railway Station (10-25 min): Hanoi Railway Station sits at 120 Le Duan Street. It's just a 10-15 minute taxi ride or a 20-25 minute walk to the Old Quarter.

For accommodation, stay in 3 main areas:

The Old Quarter (around Hoan Kiem Lake): Perfect for first-time visitors, with plenty of hotels at all price points. You'll be within walking distance of major attractions, street food, and nightlife. It's busy and authentic but can be noisy.

The French Quarter (south of Hoan Kiem Lake): Offers more upscale hotels and a quieter atmosphere. It's great if you prefer colonial charm and high-end restaurants while still being close to attractions.

West Lake Area: Choose this if you want a more relaxed stay. It's popular with expats and has numerous boutique hotels and luxury properties. It's further from the center but offers beautiful lake views and excellent restaurants.

Now for the good part - food! Circle these spots:

  • Pho Thin (61 Dinh Tien Hoang) for legendary beef noodles
  • Bun Cha Huong Lien (24 Le Van Huu) where Obama dined
  • Hang Be Market for fresh spring rolls at dawn
  • Ta Hien Street for buzzing night eats
