Mekong Delta Location Map: Where is Mekong Delta in Vietnam

Mekong Delta Location Map
Mekong Delta Location Map

This map of the Mekong Delta shows you some really interesting things. Located at the very southern tip of Vietnam, it's about 200 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City.

It spreads out like a giant fan, covering an area of about 40,000 square kilometers – that's bigger than you might think! It basically makes up the entire bottom part of Vietnam and looks like a peninsula with water on three sides.

You can also see how the river network splits into smaller channels, forming what locals call the "Nine Dragons." These are the main branches of the Mekong River as it divides before flowing into the sea. You can also understand why this area is known as Vietnam's "rice bowl" because the well-developed water system makes the land incredibly fertile.

Mekong Delta Map with Cities

On this Mekong Delta cities map, there are 13 cities in total. However, travelers tend to visit just a few key ones. So, we'll use Can Tho as our central point of reference. This map will help you understand how these cities are connected and what makes each one special.

Can Tho is the delta's largest city, right in the center. It famous for its Cai Rang floating market - the biggest in the Delta. The city serves as the perfect base for exploring the region.

Moving northeast from Can Tho, you'll find My Tho. This is usually the first stop for visitors from Ho Chi Minh City. My Tho is known for its fruit orchards and nearby islands - Dragon, Phoenix, Tortoise, and Unicorn Islands. The city gives you your first real taste of Delta life.

Ben Tre, just east of My Tho, is called the "Land of Coconuts." The city is surrounded by coconut groves and known for its traditional candy-making. Here, you can explore small canals and watch local craftspeople at work.

Vinh Long, northwest of Can Tho, sits between two branches of the Mekong. It's famous for its home-stays and fruit gardens. The city offers a more authentic Delta experience, with fewer tourists than My Tho.

Sa Dec, further north of Vinh Long, is known as the "Garden of the Mekong." It's famous for its flower nurseries and as the setting for the novel "The Lover" by Marguerite Duras.

Chau Doc, in the far west near Cambodia, is unique for its mix of Vietnamese, Cham, and Khmer cultures. The city is known for its floating fish farms and Sam Mountain - the highest point in the Delta.

Soc Trang, southeast of Can Tho, is famous for its Khmer pagodas, especially the Bat Pagoda. It offers insights into the region's diverse cultural heritage.

Mekong Delta Tourist Map: Find Best Attractions on Map

Let me show you around the Mekong Delta using this tourist map. I'll start with the region's most unique feature - the floating markets - and then guide you through other remarkable attractions.

The Floating Markets

These markets are the soul of the delta—where locals trade goods from boats, just as they've done for centuries. You'll taste fresh fruits, see daily life unfold on water, and snap unforgettable photos. Arrive early (5-7am) to see:

  • Cai Rang Floating Market (Can Tho): Vietnam's largest floating market, where boats overflow with fruits and noodles at dawn. A UNESCO-recognized cultural treasure.
  • Phong Điền Floating Market (Can Tho, smaller, more authentic): Where locals trade directly between boats. Called "Asia's most vibrant water commerce" by Lonely Planet.
  • Cai Be Floating Market (between Vinh Long and My Tho) - Famous for its floating restaurants and fruit orchards.
  • Bình Minh Floating Market (near Vinh Long), is smaller but gives you a glimpse of local life without the crowds.

Cultural & Natural Wonders

Moving to other attractions, Ben Tre's Coconut Village, east of My Tho, showcases traditional coconut processing and handicrafts. The famous Vinh Trang Pagoda stands near My Tho city, known for its unique blend of architectural styles - Vietnamese, Khmer, and Chinese.

In the western region, Tra Su Cajuput Forest near Chau Doc creates a mystical scene with its flooded forest. Nearby, Ba Chua Xu Temple at the foot of Sam Mountain is one of Vietnam's most important pilgrimage sites.

Tram Chim National Park, in Dong Thap Province, is renowned for its bird sanctuary and diverse wetland ecosystem. It's home to the rare red-headed cranes and best visited during the bird-watching season.

At the southernmost tip, Cà Mau Cape National Park marks Vietnam's southern point, where two seas meet. It's famous for its mangrove forests and diverse marine life.

Can Tho Map: Your Guide to Vietnam's Mekong Delta Hub

Can Tho Map
Can Tho Map

This map of Can Tho helps you understand the layout of the Mekong Delta's largest city and the main places you'll likely visit.

Can Tho covers 1,400 square kilometers and is divided by the Hau River. It has a bustling central area, like Ninh Kieu on the east bank, as well as quieter neighborhoods such as Binh Thuy to the northwest.

Transport Hubs

Can Tho International Airport: 8 km northwest of downtown. Flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and regional cities.

Can Tho Bus Station: 5 km south of Ninh Kieu, near Cai Rang.

Must-See Sights (Marked on Map)

Just 6 kilometers southwest of the city center, you'll find the famous Cai Rang Floating Market. It's best visited early morning, around 5-7 AM, when hundreds of boats gather to trade. A bit further southwest is Phong Dien Floating Market, smaller but more authentic.

Other notable attractions include:

  • Ninh Kieu Wharf (Central Ninh Kieu): Iconic sunset views, riverside cafes, and the Can Tho Bridge lit up at night.
  • Binh Thuy Ancient House (4 km north of downtown): A 140-year-old French-colonial gem featured in films like The Lover.
  • Bang Lang Stork Garden, about 40 kilometers northwest of the center.
  • Can Tho Museum, in the city center, offering insights into local history
  • My Khanh Tourist Village, 10 kilometers from center, famous for its fruit gardens

Accommodation & Food Area

For accommodation, I recommend staying in the Ninh Kieu District, particularly along Hai Ba Trung Street or near the waterfront. This area has many hotels ranging from budget to luxury, and you'll be within walking distance of main attractions.

The food scene centers around De Tham Street and the night market near Ninh Kieu Wharf. This area is famous for local specialties like hu tieu (noodle soup) and banh cong (shrimp and mung bean cakes).
