Xi’an Location Map: Map of Xi’an China (In the Middle of China)

Xi’an Location Map
Xi’an Location Map

On this Xi’an location map, it’s easy to see that Xi’an sits in the central part of China. That’s one reason why so many ancient dynasties — 13 in total — chose it as their capital. Within its own province, Shaanxi, Xi’an is located in the southern part.

To the north, it’s about 1,000 kilometers from Beijing, China’s capital. If you head east to the coast, Shanghai is about 1,380 kilometers away.

Xi’an is also famous for being the eastern end of the Silk Road, which makes it an important gateway for anyone interested in Silk Road travel.

Xi’an City Map: City Layout, Metro Map

Here we show you two useful maps.

One is the Xi’an city map. It gives a clear view of the city’s full area, which covers about 10,100 to 10,750 square kilometers. But for most travelers, the main places to visit are in the city center. These include six main districts: Xincheng, Beilin, Lianhu, Baqiao, Weiyang, and Yanta.

The second map is the Xi’an metro map. Xi’an has 12 subway lines in total. For visitors, the most useful ones are Lines 2, 4, and 9.

  • Line 2 takes you to places like the Bell and Drum Towers, Muslim Street, Xi’an North Station, and the Shaanxi History Museum.
  • Line 4 goes to Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Great Tang All Day Mall.
  • Line 9 connects to the Terracotta Warriors, Huaqing Palace, and Lishan Mountain.

Xi’an Tourist Map

Looking at a tourist map of Xi'an together. I'll point out the must-see spots and tell you why they're so special.

Xi'an City Wall: Look here at the center of the map. The big, perfect rectangle you see is the Xi'an City Wall. This is one of the oldest, largest, and best-preserved city walls in all of China.

Bell Tower Situated in the geographical center of ancient Xi’an, the Bell Tower is a magnificent wooden structure and a city landmark.

Drum Tower Located near the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower is another impressive Ming Dynasty structure. Together with the Bell Tower, they are iconic symbols of Xi'an.

Muslim Quarter: Right in the heart of the area inside the wall, you'll find the Muslim Quarter. This area is a vibrant hub of culture and amazing food.

Great Mosque of Xi'an: It's also where you'll find the Great Mosque of Xi’an, which is really unique because it blends Chinese and Islamic architectural styles.

Big Wild Goose Pagoda: Let's look just outside the city center to the south. Here is the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. This famous Buddhist pagoda was built during the Tang Dynasty, over 1,300 years ago, to store Buddhist scriptures brought back from India.

Shaanxi History Museum: Nearby, you'll also find the Shaanxi History Museum. This is a must-visit because it's like a treasure chest of Chinese history.

Datang Everbright City (Great Tang All Day Mall): Right next to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, you’ll find this colorful pedestrian street full of lights, music, and shows. It brings Tang Dynasty culture to life in a fun, modern way, and is a great place to enjoy the night.

Terracotta Army: To the east of the city. This is where you'll find the most famous attraction of all. It's considered the "Eighth Wonder of the World." This is a massive collection of life-sized clay soldiers, horses, and chariots that were buried with China's first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, to protect him in the afterlife.

Daming Palace National Heritage Park This was the grandest royal palace of the Tang Dynasty, serving as the political center and symbol of the empire.

Han Yang Ling Mausoleum (Tomb of Emperor Jingdi) This is the burial place of a Han Dynasty emperor and his empress.

Mount Hua (Huashan): Located to the east of Xi’an, Huashan is one of China’s Five Great Mountains. Hiking to the top is challenging but unforgettable, and cable cars are also available.

Terracotta Army Maps

The Terracotta Army is a vast archaeological site that can be challenging to visit. In fact, the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum consists of two main parts: the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum, and the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Archaeological Park (Lishan Garden). Our Terracotta Army Map will show you the layout of the site.
