The basic exhibition focuses on Xi'an's history as the ancient capital of 13 dynasties, its more than 1,000 years of capital history, and over 3,000 years of urban development. Through numerous city models from the Zhou, Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing periods, the museum showcases the historical development of Xi'an's urban development. The Xian Museum has three treasures, including the gilded statue of the Maitreya Buddha, which Dong Qin created in the fourth year of the Sui dynasty (董钦造鎏金弥陀佛像), the jade "gaozu" cup from the Qin dynasty (秦代玉高足杯), and the Tang dynasty Sancai flying horse (唐代三彩腾空马).
The Small Goose Pagoda (小雁塔) is a part of the Xian Museum, located about 4km away from the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. It is a typical example of early Chinese square brick pagodas with multiple eaves. Originally consisting of 15 levels, it now has 13 and stands at a height of 43.4 meters. The pagoda is a beautiful example of Tang Dynasty Buddhist architecture and a symbol of the integration of Buddhism into Han culture in central China. Built during the reign of Emperor Zhongzong of Tang (707-710 AD), the pagoda was constructed to house Buddhist sutras and images brought back from India by the famous monk Yijing. Every morning, the temple rings its bell, which can be heard for several miles around. The clear tone of the bell and the elegant shape of the pagoda create a unique atmosphere in the ancient city. The "Morning Bell Chimes of the Small Goose Pagoda" is renowned as one of the "Eight Great Sights of Guanzhong".
No.8: Hanyangling (Tomb of Emperor Jingdi)
Hanyangling, also known as the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi, is a magnificent burial complex that houses the tomb of Emperor Jing, the fourth ruler of the Western Han dynasty from 157 to 141 BC. Together with his father, Emperor Wen of Han (Liu Heng), he established the first period of monarchic despotism in Chinese history, known as the Wenjing period.
This impressive complex has restored tomb chambers, sacrificial pits, spirit ways, and a museum exhibition showcasing the preserved artifacts. The scale of the tomb offers a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the Han dynasty during the 2nd century BC. The jade burial suits, adorned weapons, and intricate carvings found within the tomb chambers bring to life the ancient imperial past of Xian.
The Han terracotta figures, uncovered at the site, are a third of the size of an actual person, standing at approximately 60 centimeters tall. These figures are depicted as armless and naked. Hanyangling is a fantastic destination for travelers, especially for those departing on a flight or high-speed train. Plan to spend at least two hours exploring the mausoleum complex and exhibits.
No.9: Xian Drum Tower & Bell Tower
The Xi'an Bell Tower stands proudly at the center of the city, at the crossroads of the four main streets enclosed by the Ming dynasty city walls. It is the most complete and largest bell tower in China. In ancient times, a massive bell was hung at the top of the tower to sound the alarm and signal the time, thus giving it the name "Bell Tower".
Located approximately 200 meters northwest of the Xi'an Bell Tower, the Xi'an Drum Tower is another iconic landmark of the city. It features deep green glazed tiles covering the eaves, and gold-painted decorations and carvings inside the tower. The top of the tower is crowned with a gilded spire. Visitors can climb the stairs inside the tower to reach the top and enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Under the third eaves of the Drum Tower, two hanging plaques can be found - one on the south side reading "a place of literary and martial prosperity", and the other on the north side reading "the sound is heard in heaven". The Drum Tower houses various types of drums from ancient times to the present day.
The Jingyun Bell (a replica) on the Xi'an Bell Tower rings 24 times every day at 9 am, 12 pm, and 3 pm. At 6 pm, the drums of the twenty-four solar terms first sound in unison on the Xi'an Drum Tower. The area surrounding the Bell and Drum Towers is also a great place to explore local restaurants, teahouses, and souvenir shops. In the evening, visitors can enjoy the fountain show with changing colors and dancing to music on the Bell and Drum Tower Square.
