Huangguoshu Waterfall (黄果树瀑布): Enjoy Screaming and Soaring Water Fun
Coming to Guizhou and skipping Huangguoshu Waterfall? No way! This is the superstar of waterfalls—not just in China, but all across Asia.

It's massive, it's loud, it's dramatic, and it's even been a film star! Yup, fans of the classic TV show Journey to the West will recognize it as one of the most iconic filming spots.
Just a chill 2-hour drive from Guiyang, and boom—you’re face to face with one of nature’s most epic shows.
Before you even see the waterfall, you’ll hear it. Imagine thunder rumbling through the mountains… that’s Huangguoshu saying hello. You’ll be dying to know what’s making all that noise.
Then, as you hike up the boardwalk opposite the falls, it finally appears—bam! Towering 77.8 meters high and 101 meters wide, it’s like a giant football field of water crashing down right in front of you. How amazing and screaming!
Keep going along the path and get ready for the real fun—a secret tunnel behind the waterfall! Welcome to Water Curtain Cave (水帘洞). Yes, you can actually walk behind the rushing water like you're in a fantasy movie.

Just don’t try anything crazy like jumping down—this isn’t an action scene (and there are signs for a reason!).
Practical Tips: Huangguoshu Waterfall is just one main attraction in Huangguoshu Scenic Resort. Don’t skip the other two points: Doupotang Waterfall (陡坡塘瀑布) and Tianxingqiao Scenic Area (天星桥).

Fanjing Mountain (梵净山): Marvel at the Twin Temples on Top Peak
Ready to take your Guizhou adventure to the next level—literally? Let’s head northeast to the one and only Fanjing Mountain.
You’ve probably seen that viral photo: a skinny sky-high peak split in two, with temples perched on top like they grew out of the rock, and a tiny stone bridge keeping everything together like a giant hairpin. Yeah… that’s Fanjing Mountain. And yes, it’s totally real.

It’s no wonder Fanjing made it to the UNESCO list. Pictures are cool, but being there? That’s the real thrill.
Getting there is part of the adventure. After arriving in Tongren by high-speed train, it’s a 2-hour drive to the mountain gate. Then hop on a shuttle bus, jump in a cable car, and then you’re at the base of Red Cloud Golden Summit (the peak in the picture).
The final stretch up to the twin temples takes about an hour of climbing along narrow, twisty steps, sometimes on all fours. But trust us, when you reach the top and look out over a sea of misty peaks, all that huffing and puffing feels totally worth it.
After a short break and a hundred photos, head down the other side of the trail. But hey—don’t rush back to the cable car just yet!

Make sure to walk over to the Old Golden Summit and the funky Mushroom Rock for a whole new angle. From here, the Red Cloud peak looks like a giant giving you a thumbs-up. It’s the ultimate photo spot and the perfect “I conquered Fanjing” moment.

Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village (西江千户苗寨): Explore Miao’s Diaojiaolou & Culture
After Fanjing Mountain, It’s time to explore the most exciting part of Guizhou - Southeastern Qian (Qiandongnan). The adventure begins near Kaili, in the famed Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village.

Xijiang is the largest and most well-known Miao village in Guizhou, built gracefully along the contours of the Leigong Mountain (雷公山). Traditional wooden stilt houses, known as Diaojiaolou (吊脚楼), cascade down the hillside like a grand wooden tapestry.
At the foot of the village, the Baishui River flows gently through, providing water and sustenance for generations of Miao inhabitants. Spanning the river are five covered wind-and-rain bridges, which have become iconic symbols of the village.
The hardworking Miao people also transformed the surrounding hills into layers of terraced fields, ingeniously using every inch of arable land. Together, these elements form the breathtaking landscape of modern-day Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village.
The village’s night view is one of its highlights. Stay in a homestay higher up the mountain, and from the wooden balcony of your stilt house, watch as the warm village lights twinkle like stars across the hillside. At night, surrounded by the sounds of crickets and frogs, you’ll drift into sleep — a peaceful escape from the noise of city life.

More Miao Villages in Guizhou
Langde Miao Village – smaller and quieter, but still super charming. Great if you want a more local, less touristy feel.
Basha Miao Village – totally unique. The men still carry traditional rifles (don’t worry, it’s ceremonial), and their hair culture is unlike anything you’ve seen.
Zhaoxing Dong Village (肇兴侗寨): Experience Dong’s Drum Tower & Villages
Say goodbye to Miao Village, continue our journey to Zhaoxing Dong Village, the biggest and probably the coolest Dong village in all of China.
First question you might ask: “Wait, didn’t I just see a bunch of stilt houses in the Miao villages?” Yup, but here’s the big difference - Drum Towers.

Drum Towers are the heart and soul of every Dong village, and Zhaoxing has five of them. Yep, five! They look like wooden pyramids with tiered rooftops and curved eaves - super photogenic and even more impressive in person.
Even the village gate is designed like a mini drum tower, so the Dong style hits you the moment you arrive.
But what really makes Zhaoxing special? The Dong Grand Song (侗族大歌). No instruments, no lyrics, just pure vocal magic. Locals sing in natural harmonies that sound like a choir of mountain spirits. Some songs are soft and dreamy, others are full of life. Catch a live performance in the village square and prepare to get goosebumps.

More Dong Villages to Explore:
Tang’an Dong Village (堂安侗寨) – smaller, quieter, and connected to Zhaoxing by a scenic hiking trail.
Dali Dong Village (大利侗寨) – surrounded by rice terraces and super chill.
Zhanli Dong Village (占里侗寨) – famous for its ancient customs and traditional ways of life.

Zhenyuan Ancient Town (镇远古镇): Boat through This Riverside Gem
Beyond ethnic villages, Guizhou also offers ancient towns known for their unique charm—like Zhenyuan Ancient Town, just a 1.5-hour drive from Kaili.
With over 2,000 years of history, Zhenyuan is a dreamy blend of old-school Chinese architecture, Taoist cliffside temples, stone bridges, and minority culture—all wrapped around the emerald-green Wuyang River like a jade bracelet.
The river is the heart of the town—locals nap by it, kids play near it, and visitors (like you) stroll or cruise along it for killer views.
Compared with other ancient towns in China, Zhenyuan feels refreshingly uncommercialized. It’s a scenic and cultural detour worth taking—an ideal stop to relax and soak in the atmosphere before heading onward to the sacred peaks of Mount Fanjing.

Other Unique Ancient Town in Guizhou
Qingyan Ancient Town (青岩古镇) – Near Guiyang
Just a short drive from Guiyang, Qingyan is a best-preserved stone towns with old city gates, weathered walls (mini Great Wall), secret alleys, and snack vendors on every corner.
Longli Ancient Town (隆里古城) – Off-the-Beaten-Path Charm
Tucked between Kaili and Zhenyuan, Longli is once a Ming Dynasty military outpost, now a town of slow, sleepy rhythm with moss-covered walls and faded murals.
Shiqiao Miao Village (石桥古村) – Papermaking + Peace
Located near Kaili, this Miao village is famous for its 1,000-year-old tradition of handmade paper—yes, actual paper made from tree bark and mountain water.
Visit Jiabang Terraced Fields (加榜梯田): Enjoy Nature’s Color Show
After exploring all those amazing villages and towns, why not swing by some truly jaw-dropping rice terraces? In Guizhou, terraces are everywhere—some small and charming, others grand and majestic.

And if you're looking for the most impressive of them all, Jiabang Terraced Fields should be your next stop. Just 100 km from Zhaoxing Dong Village, it's a scenic ride away.
Jiabang is like Guizhou’s hidden gem. While it doesn’t have the international fame of Guilin’s Longji or Yunnan’s Yuanyang, it totally holds its own—with a more raw, untouched beauty that feels refreshingly authentic.
Picture this: postcard-perfect layers of rice paddies spilling down the mountains, with traditional Miao stilt houses tucked right between them.
Oh, and it’s not just about growing rice here. Jiabang’s terraces are part of a clever little eco-system: they raise ducks and fish in the paddies too—nature and farming, working together like besties.

Best time to go? From April to October, Jiabang puts on a magical transformation:
- April–May: Water mirrors the sky
- June–August: Lush green vibes
- September–October: Golden harvest glow
Want more terrace time? Check out these other beauties nearby: Tang’an Terraces (堂安梯田), Gaoyao Terraces (高要梯田) and Lali Terraces (腊利梯田).
Join in Guizhou Festivals (节日): Experience Local Ethnic Culture
Let’s talk festivals, because in Guizhou, there’s literally one happening almost every day. With over 17 ethnic groups living here and more than 1,000 traditional festivals, it’s safe to say Guizhou knows how to celebrate life!
What’s it like? Locals dressed in bright, embroidered outfits, sparkling silver accessories, and big smiles. The whole village turns into a colorful fashion show, but way cooler because it’s real life. And then there’s the music—drums, flutes, singing—and dance that makes you want to join in, even if you have no idea what’s going on. That kind of joy? Totally contagious.

Food is, of course, a big part of the party. Family feasts, shared dishes, and local snacks make every festival a celebration of flavor too. (P.S. More on Guizhou’s food scene later—you’re gonna want to keep reading.)
Pro tip: If you’re planning a trip, check the local calendar and time your visit with one of the bigger festivals that welcome outsiders. It’s one of the best (and most fun!) ways to experience the region’s culture up close.

Taste Guizhou Food: Unique Sour and Spicy Flavors
Here comes the food feast! If you’ve ever dipped a spoon into that glorious jar of Lao Gan Ma chili crisp, congrats, you’ve already had a taste of Guizhou. That fiery, savory, addictive flavor? Yup, that’s Guizhou magic in a jar. But what makes it stand out? Sourness. Real, mouth-puckering, appetite-boosting sourness.

Why so sour?
Blame it on the mountains. Guizhou is super humid, and back in the day, storing fresh food was tricky. So locals got creative and turned fermentation into an art form. The result? A food culture where literally anything can be pickled—veggies, meats, river fish, even fruit.
How does it taste?
If you’re into Thai food, you’re gonna love Guizhou. It’s bold, it’s zesty, and it’s made to go with steaming bowls of rice. If you can handle Tom Yum (冬阴功), you’ll have no trouble falling for a bowl of Guizhou Sour Soup Fish.
Must-Try Guizhou Dishes (Don’t leave without these!):
- Sour Soup Fish (酸汤鱼) – The GOAT of Guizhou cuisine. Made with fermented tomato or rice soup, chili, and fresh river fish. Hot, sour, and unforgettable.
- Siwawa (丝娃娃) – Like Chinese spring rolls, but cooler.
- Sticky Rice Everything (糯米饭) – Sweet, savory, grilled, steamed… Sticky rice is life here, especially in the minority villages**.**

Xiaoqikong (小七孔): Guizhou’s Fairyland of Waterfalls and Emerald Lakes
Full from all that Guizhou deliciousness? Time to walk it off in Libo’s Xiaoqikong Scenic Area, one of China’s most stunning hidden gems.

This place is straight out of a fantasy movie—emerald-green lakes, cascading waterfalls, and lush karst forests that stay cool even in summer. It’s no wonder people call it a “paradise on Earth.” And yes, UNESCO thinks it’s that special too—it’s part of the South China Karst World Heritage Site.
Take a relaxing hike along well-marked boardwalks. Along the way, you’ll see the 400-year-old Seven Arches Bridge, jade-like peaceful pools that look like Jiuzhaigou, and waterfalls rushing through the forest. It’s a perfect summer escape from the heat.
Getting there: From Guiyang, it’s an easy 3-hour drive or 1.5-hour high-speed train to Libo.
Wanfenglin (万峰林): Guizhou’s Karst Landscape Heaven
While Xiaoqikong gives you water magic, Wanfenglin in Xingyi shows off Guizhou’s mountain side. This is karst landscape heaven—thousands of lush, sharp peaks rising like waves across the land. People call it “China’s most beautiful peak forest.”

What does it look like? Guilin without Li River but with more rolling peaks. Or Bohol’s Chocolate Hills with steeper, greener, taller peaks. At the base of these jagged peaks, you’ll find beautiful Bouyei villages and flat rice fields. In spring, golden rapeseed flowers bloom like rivers of gold flowing through the valleys.
If you're into photography, this is your dream spot. Come at sunrise or sunset, climb to a viewing platform, and let the light and shadow do their magic. Or better yet**, bike or walk** through the villages and fields below—you’ll find peaceful scenes and the real rural charm of Guizhou.
Other Spots in Xingyi:
- Maling River Canyon: A dramatic gorge with waterfalls plunging from cliffs—perfect for a cool hike.
- Wanfeng Lake: Ideal for boating and soaking in the mountain views from the water.
Karst Caves (溶洞): Guizhou’s Underground Wonderland
Guizhou’s karst magic doesn’t stop at waterfalls and peaks—it goes underground, too. The province has thousands of caves, many among the biggest and wildest in all of China.

These caves feature otherworldly rock formations, underground rivers, and colossal chambers, often illuminated with colorful lights for dramatic effect.
What to Expect in Guizhou’s Karst Caves
Stalactites & Stalagmites
Needle-like, curtain-like, or mushroom-shaped formations created by dripping mineral-rich water. Famous examples: "Stone Forest" in Zhijin Cave, "Jade Pillar" in Dragon Palace Cave.
Underground Waterfalls & Rivers
Some caves have boat rides (e.g., Dragon Palace Cave 龙宫) through submerged tunnels.
Malinghe Canyon (near Wanfenglin) combines caves with cliffside waterfalls.
Colossal Chambers
Zhydong Cave (织金洞), China’s largest karst cave, has a hall so big it could fit a 30-story building.
