Seoul to Gyeongju: KTX, SRT or Bus to Cover 340km Distance

Gyeongju is a "museum without walls" and a perfect day trip from Seoul. It is also the ideal middle stop for the Seoul to Gyeongju to Busan route.

How to get from Seoul to Gyeongju?

The city is about 340 km southeast of the capital. You have 4 ways to cover the Seoul to Gyeongju distance: KTX, SRT, express bus, or flight.

The high-speed trains from Seoul to Gyeongju takes just 2 hours, while the Seoul to Gyeongju bus takes 3.5-4 hours.

I DON'T recommend flying, as it takes the longest when you factor in transfers, about 4+ hours.

Read to the end for insider tips! I'll show you how to navigate Gyeongju and how to link your trip to Busan with a private ride.

Key Takeaways

  • The Seoul to Gyeongju KTX is your fastest bet, getting you there in about 2 hours.
  • Location matters. High-speed trains arrive at Gyeongju Station (formerly Singyeongju), which is a 30-minute hop from the historic sites.
  • If you want to save cash and land right in the Gyeongju city center, the 3.5-4 hours express Seoul to Gyeongju bus is your friend.
  • I DON'T recommend a Seoul to Gyeongju flight. Gyeongju has no airport, and transfers from Pohang Airport take 4+ hours, longer than the train.

Seoul to Gyeongju Distance: A Comparison of the 4 Ways for Getting There

Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju
Bulguksa Temple, Gyeongju

So, how far is Gyeongju from Seoul? You're looking at a journey of about 340 km heading southeast toward the coast.

For the map geeks out there, Gyeongju sits at 35.8562° N, 129.2132° E. While it looks far on paper, South Korea's transit makes it feel like a breeze.

Here is the breakdown of your 4 options to travel from Seoul to Gyeongju.

Transport Mode Distance Time (Total) Cost (Approx.) Departure & Arrival Popularity
KTX Train 335 km 2.5h ₩49,300+ ($33+) Seoul Stn → Gyeongju Stn ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
SRT Train 318 km 2.5h ₩42,000+ ($28+) Suseo Stn → Gyeongju Stn ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Express Bus 340 km 3.5-4h ₩20,000+ ($13) Seoul Express Bus Terminal → Gyeongju city center ⭐⭐⭐
Flight 320 km 4h+ ₩70,000+ ($47) Gimpo → Pohang Airport
How to Choose Your Route?

The KTX or SRT is the fastest on tracks, taking about 2 hours.

High-speed trains drop you 12km out at Singyeongju Station, adding a 25-minute transit to the center. The SRT is often 10% cheaper and features newer cars.

The express bus is the hidden winner for convenience. While the drive is 3.5–4 hours, it drops you directly in the historic center.

I DON'T recommend flying. By the time you clear security and transfer from neighboring Pohang Airport, you've lost the day.

#1 & 2. Seoul to Gyeongju Train (2.5h Total): The Seoul to Gyeongju KTX vs. SRT

If you want to maximize your time, the train is the way to go from Seoul to Gyeongju. It's perfect for those who value speed and comfort over a bargain bus seat.

You actually have 2 high-speed choices: the KTX (the famous national bullet train) and the SRT (the newer competitor).

Both fly across the country at similar speeds (up to 305 km/h), so your choice really comes down to which side of Seoul you're waking up in.

Departure: Seoul Station (KTX) or Suseo Station (SRT)

Seoul Station
Seoul Station

The biggest difference between these two isn't the train itself—it's where they start!

Seoul Station is the grand central hub in the north, while Suseo Station serves the modern, upscale neighborhoods in the southeast.

Station Dist. to Seoul Center Getting There Transfer Time Best For
Seoul (KTX) 0 km Subway L1 / L4 10–15 mins Myeongdong, Hongdae
Suseo (SRT) 12 km Subway L3 / Bundang 20–30 mins Gangnam, Jamsil
Where to Depart?

Stay near Seoul Station if you want to be in the historic heart of the city. It's the most convenient for first-time tourists.

However, if you are based in Gangnam, the SRT from Suseo Station is a total lifesaver.

You'll save at least 40 minutes of subway transit through cross-town traffic, plus the ticket price is about 10% cheaper than the KTX.

The Train Ride: About 2 Hours

KTX Bullet Train in South Korea

Once you're on board, both trains from Seoul to Gyeongju offer a smooth, quiet experience as you zip toward the coast.

The Seoul to Gyeongju train time is almost identical for both, hitting top speeds of 300 km/h to get you there in a flash, about 2 hours.

Train Mode Travel Time Price (Standard) Price (First Class) Frequency Seat Details Legroom
KTX 2h 05m ₩49,300 ($33) ₩69,000 ($47) Every 30 mins Standard (2+2) / First Class (2+1) Great (Forward facing on Sancheon)
SRT 2h ₩42,000 ($28) ₩60,900 ($42) Every 40 mins Standard (2+2) / First Class (2+1) Extra Spacious (All forward facing)
Seoul to Gyeongju Train Booking Tips

Book in Advance: I can't stress this enough—book at least 1–2 weeks ahead. Tickets for weekends, Friday evenings, and holiday seasons (like Cherry Blossoms in April) sell out fast.

Booking the KTX: For the KTX, the official Korail website or app is your best friend, especially if you plan to use a KR Pass.

SRT Workaround: The SRT system can be a bit picky with international phone numbers and cards, so I highly recommend using the Trip website. It's much more user-friendly for global travelers and saves you the headache of payment errors.

Arrival: Both at Gyeongju Station (About 30mins from City Center)

Gyeongju Station, also called Singyeongju Station
Gyeongju Station, also called Singyeongju Station

Whether you chose the KTX or the SRT, you'll end up at the same spot: Gyeongju Station.

This hub is located about 12 km outside the city center, so don't expect to see the ancient tombs the moment you step off the platform.

To get to the "Museum Without Walls" in the city center, you have 2 easy options.

A taxi will take about 15–20 minutes and cost roughly ₩15,000 (~$10). If you prefer the bus, look for Bus #50 or #700; it's a budget-friendly ₩1,300 (~$0.85) and takes about 30 minutes.

Note on the Gyeongju Station Name

You might see this listed as Singyeongju Station on older maps or booking sites. It was recently renamed to simply Gyeongju Station.

But just remember—it's the high-speed hub in the suburbs, not the old, closed station in the city center.

#3. The Budget Seoul to Gyeongju Bus (3.5-4h): Seoul Express Bus Terminal to Gyeongju

Express Bus in South Korea
Express Bus in South Korea

If you're looking to save some won for extra street food, the bus is your best friend.

It's perfect for budget-conscious travelers or those who want to avoid the extra transfer from the suburban train station.

Since the bus drops you directly in the old town, it's arguably the door-to-door way to travel from Seoul to Gyeongju!

You'll be traveling from the heart of Seoul to the heart of Gyeongju in about 3.5 hours. While it's slower than the train, the "Premium" buses feel like flying business class on wheels, offering privacy curtains.

Feature Details
Departure Seoul Express Bus Terminal (Gyeongbu Line)
Arrival Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal (City Center)
Travel Time 3.5-4h (Subject to traffic)

How to find the bus terminals?

In Seoul, head to the Seoul Express Bus Terminal in Seocho-gu (Subway Lines 3, 7, and 9). It's right in the city, so a subway ride is just ₩1,500 (~$1) and takes about 20 minutes from Gangnam or Myeongdong.

Once you arrive in Gyeongju, you'll step off at the Gyeongju Express Bus Terminal. You are already in the city center! From here, you can walk to Hwangnidan-gil in 10 minutes for free, or take a quick ₩5,000 (~$3.5) taxi to your Hanok stay.

How to Buy the Bus Tickets?

For international travelers, the Kobus website can be tricky with foreign cards.

I recommend using the T-Money GO app or simply buying your ticket at the terminal kiosks—they have great English menus and accept major credit cards!

#4. Seoul to Gyeongju Flight (4h+ Total): via Pohang-Gyeongju Airport (KPO)

Seoul Gimpo Airport
Seoul Gimpo Airport

I'll be honest with you: I almost NEVER recommend flying from Seoul to Gyeongju. Gyeongju doesn't have its own airport, so you have to fly into neighboring Pohang.

By the time you get to the airport, clear security, and transfer to Gyeongju, the train has already arrived, and you'd likely be halfway through a bowl of bibimbap!

This is ONLY a good fit if you are already staying at Gimpo Airport or just really love the view from 30,000 feet.

Even though the flight itself is only 1 hour, the total journey is a marathon! Here is the reality check: 1h (to Airport) + 1.5h (Check-in) + 1h (Flight) + 45m (Transfer) = ~4+ hours total.

Step 1: Getting to Gimpo Airport (GMP)

Gimpo Airport is much closer to the city than Incheon, making it the primary hub for domestic hops in South Korea.

It's located about 15km west of central Seoul. You can take a taxi or a AREX train to get to the airport.

Transfer Mode Dist. to Seoul Center Transfer Time Price (Approx.)
Taxi 15 km 40 mins ₩20,000 ($14)
AREX Train 15 km 25 mins ₩1,600 ($1.1)

Step 2: One Hour Flight from Seoul to Gyeongju

You'll be looking for flights from Gimpo (GMP) to Pohang-Gyeongju (KPO). Jin Air is the main carrier here, but keep in mind they often ONLY have 3 or 5 flights per day.

Route Flight Time Price (Approx.) Frequency Schedule
GMP → KPO 1 hour ₩75,000 ($51) 3–5 per day Daily

Step 3: Bus or Taxi from Pohang to Gyeongju

Once you land at Pohang-Gyeongju Airport, you aren't quite "there" yet. The airport is about 35 km away from the Gyeongju historic district.

You can grab Bus #1200 which takes about 1 hour for ₩1,500 (~$1). Most travelers prefer a taxi, which cuts the time down to 40 minutes but will cost you around ₩40,000 (~$27).

When you add this to your airfare, the train starts looking like a massive bargain!

Getting Around Gyeongju, the Museum Without Walls

Gyeongju National Museum
Gyeongju National Museum

Once you've successfully navigated your way from Seoul to Gyeongju, the real fun begins! The city is a massive park, and because it's so flat, it's remarkably EASY to explore.

Depending on where you land—the train station, the bus terminal, or the airport—here is how you get to the heart of the action.

From To City Center Distance Travel Time Price (Approx.)
Gyeongju Train Station Historic Area 12 km 20 mins ₩15,000 ($10) by Taxi
Bus Terminal Hwangnidan-gil 1 km 5 mins Free (It's a walk!)
Pohang Airport Historic Area 35 km 45 mins ₩40,000 ($27) by Taxi

For the best experience to navigate the city, I recommend a mix of these 3:

☞ Bicycles or Scooters (The Local Favorite): This is the bicycle capital of South Korea! Rent a bike near Hwangnidan-gil for about ₩10,000 (~$7) a day. It's the perfect way to zip between the Daereungwon Tombs and the observatory.

☞ The Local Bus: For far-flung spots like Bulguksa Temple, jump on Bus #10 or #11. Each ride is only ₩1,300 (~$0.85)—just tap your T-money card and go.

☞ Taxis: Ideal for groups. Most rides within the historic district stay under ₩6,000 (~$4). Use the KakaoT app for the fastest pickups.

Is a Day Trip From Seoul to Gyeongju Feasible?

Gyeongju National Museum
Gyeongju National Museum

Yes, but it will be a marathon.

If you are short on time, a day trip is possible thanks to the high-speed KTX. However, because Gyeongju is packed with UNESCO World Heritage sites, you'll need to be disciplined with your clock.

To make it work, you must take the earliest train out and one of the last trains back.

The "UNESCO Sprint" Sample Itinerary:

You will walk a lot (expect 20,000+ steps!) and spend about $80–$100 per person on transport alone.

Time Slot Activity Travel / Note
7:30 AM Depart Seoul Station KTX Train
9:40 AM Arrive at Gyeongju Station Take a taxi to save time
10:15 AM Bulguksa Temple Furthest site; visit this first
12:30 PM Lunch at Hwangnidan-gil Traditional food in a Hanok
2:00 PM Daereungwon Burial Mounds 5-minute walk to Observatory
4:30 PM Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond Beautiful in late afternoon light
7:00 PM Dinner Near the historic center
9:00 PM Depart for Seoul KTX Train
11:10 PM Arrive at Seoul Station End of trip
Note:

The timetable above is for reference only and may change based on seasonal train schedules and local traffic.

If you can spare the time, an overnight stay in Gyeongju is much more rewarding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct train from Seoul to Gyeongju? +
Yes! Both the KTX (from Seoul Station) and the SRT (from Suseo Station) go directly to Gyeongju without any transfers.
How long is KTX from Seoul to Gyeongju? +
The journey usually takes about 2 hours and 5 minutes. Some express trains can even make it in exactly 2 hours.
Does the KTX go to the old Gyeongju Station in the city center? +
No. High-speed trains arrive at Singyeongju Station, which is about 15 minutes outside the city. The old station in the center is no longer used for KTX services.
The KTX vs. the SRT seats: which one has more legroom? +
The SRT generally offers more legroom than the standard KTX. While both are comfortable, the SRT was designed with a bit more pitch between seats, making it a favorite for taller travelers.
Can I use the KR Pass on the SRT? +
No. The KR Pass is only valid for Korail trains (like the KTX). Since the SRT is operated by a different company (SR), you must purchase those tickets separately.
Which is better for a day trip from Seoul to Gyeongju: Bus or Train? +
Definitely the train. The bus takes 3.5-4 hours one way, which eats up half your day. The KTX saves you 4 hours of travel time, giving you a full day to actually see the sites.
Do I need to book my Seoul to Gyeongju tickets in advance? +
Yes. While you can sometimes find seats last minute on weekdays, weekends and holidays sell out fast. I recommend booking 1 to 2 weeks ahead to secure your preferred time.
Is it faster to take a taxi or a bus from Singyeongju Station to the city center right now? +
A taxi is faster, taking about 12–15 minutes ($10–$13). The Line 70 bus is the best budget option; it takes about 25 minutes and costs less than $2.
Is Gyeongju walkable? +
The historic center (Hwangnidan-gil, the Tombs, and the Observatory) is very walkable and flat. However, you will need a bus or taxi to reach Bulguksa Temple, as it's about 30 minutes away from the center.
