Where Is Suwon in South Korea? Location Map & Distance from Seoul

Suwon Location Map
Suwon Location Map

Before you plan your Suwon trip, take a look at the Suwon South Korea map above. Suwon sits in the northwest of South Korea, about 30 km directly south of Seoul, inside Gyeonggi Province - the region wrapping the capital.

Once you see the distance visually, Suwon starts to feel like one of the easiest cultural escapes from Seoul. Stay based in Seoul, hop on Subway Line 1 (1 hrs) or KTX (30 min), and you're at Suwon Station. From there, a 10-minute bus or taxi ride drops you at Hwaseong Fortress.

And if you're a map nerd wondering exactly where Suwon sit, it is pinned right at 37.26° N, 127.02° E-the spot King Jeongjo chose in the 1790s when he built the fortress and nearly moved Korea's capital here.

Now zoom in from the country map to the Suwon City Map and let's use it to get your bearings. Covering about 121 sq km, Suwon is roughly the size of San Francisco. It is compact for a city, but too large to explore entirely on foot-walking straight across would take you 3 to 5 hours.

The whole city is built around Hwaseong Fortress, an 18th-century walled citadel with a 5.7 km stone wall and four grand gates. Almost every historical site sits inside those walls - the palace, the pavilions, the old market lanes.

Outside the fortress area, the modern city spreads in different directions:

  • Southwest (Arrival Hub): Suwon Station is the main transit hub, sitting about 2 km southwest of the fortress.
  • Northwest (Architecture Landmark): Starfield Suwon is home to the towering Starfield Library. It is about a 20-minute taxi ride from the fortress.
  • East (Urban Oasis): Gwanggyo Lake Park is perfect for a sleek lakeside evening, also a 20-minute taxi ride from the historic center.

Suwon Tourist Map - 9 Places Marked

Once you've got the city layout in your head, this Suwon tourist map is the one you'll actually use on the day.

It does two jobs: it shows you which sights are clustered close together (so you can knock them out in one walk), and which ones sit further out (so you can decide whether they're worth the taxi).

Attraction Korean Name Recommended Visit Time Ticket Price Highlights
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress 수원화성 2-3 hours ₩1,000 UNESCO-listed Joseon fortress; 5.7 km wall walk with sweeping city views

Gwanggyo Lake Park 광교호수공원 1 hour Free Modern lakeside park, beautiful at sunset
Pro Tips

The first four spots after the fortress - Haengridan-gil, the Mural Village, Hwaseong Haenggung, and Chicken Street - all sit either inside the fortress walls or in the lanes wrapping immediately around them.

That means you can park yourself in this one neighborhood and cover the whole cluster on foot in a leisurely half-day, no taxi needed.

The remaining spots (Starfield, Aqua Planet, Gwanggyo Lake Park) are 15-20 minutes south by cab - save them for the afternoon or a second day.

The Absolute Must-Sees: If Your Time in Suwon Is Short

Hwaseong Fortress - the whole reason Suwon exists on the tourist map. Walk at least the section between Janganmun and Hwaseomun gates for the postcard views.

Hwaseong Haenggung - the royal palace inside the walls. Small, elegant, and worth timing around the 11 a.m. martial arts performance.

Haengridan Gil - After the palace, you need a coffee break. This maze of aesthetic cafes and modernized traditional houses is the perfect spot to rest your legs and soak in the city's signature slow-travel vibe.

Suwon Chicken Street - Following your nose south to Paldalmun Gate is the absolute best way to end your walking route. Sit down at any packed restaurant for a massive plate of crispy, cauldron-fried chicken and a cold local beer.

Starfield Library - the only modern landmark that genuinely competes with the fortress for "most photographed in Suwon." Free, indoors, and a perfect end-of-day stop.

Pro Tip: How to Actually Find These Places

Skip Google Maps (it famously struggles with walking directions here) and download Naver Map or KakaoMap. I've listed the exact addresses for these top spots in both English and Korean below.

Hwaseong Fortress (Main Area): 910 Jeongjo-ro, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do (경기도 수원시 팔달구 정조로 910)

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Map: Main Gates, Wall Loop & Walking Routes

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Walking Route Map
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress Walking Route Map

If there's one map you actually print out before your trip, make it this one. Hwaseong Fortress it's a 5.7 km wall wrapping an entire neighborhood, with gates, watchtowers, and pavilions scattered along the way.

The Four Main Gates

  • Janganmun (장안문) - North Gate: The largest gate in the fortress, and arguably the most photogenic. Bigger than Seoul's famous Namdaemun.
  • Paldalmun (팔달문) - South Gate: Sits in the middle of a busy traffic circle, surrounded by the markets and Chicken Street. The liveliest gate.
  • Changnyongmun (창룡문) - East Gate: The quietest of the four. Near the archery field and the dragon-trolley boarding area.
  • Hwaseomun (화서문) - West Gate: Smaller and more intimate, paired with the Seobuk Gongsimdon observation tower right next door - one of the prettiest spots on the whole wall.

The Better Way: A Leisurely Wall + Inner-Attractions Route (Half-Day, ~4-5 hours)

Many of Suwon's best places sit inside or just beside the fortress area. So the best route is not just "walk the wall." It is wall + palace + old streets + food. This full loop takes about 2.5 to 3 hours if you keep moving. In real travel time, it often becomes 4 hours or more.

  1. Start at Paldalmun (South Gate): Have your taxi or bus drop you off right at the grand traffic circle surrounding Paldalmun. Snap your first photo from the pedestrian crossing.
  2. Early Bite at Suwon Chicken Street: 5-minute walk north. A narrow alley lined with chicken shops that have been frying birds the same way for decades. Even if it feels early, order a half portion of Suwon-style fried chicken with a cold drink
  3. Hwaseong Haenggung Palace (Highlights): Walk 12 minutes north along Jeongjo-ro and you'll arrive. You want to arrive exactly by 11:00 AM (Tuesday through Sunday) to catch the incredible Muye24ki Martial Arts Performance. Afterwards, take your time wandering the inner palace courtyards. Plan for about an hour total.
  4. Haenggung-dong Mural Village: Exit the palace and head north into the surrounding residential alleys. Find a maze of quiet, narrow streets covered in colorful, quirky street art that makes for fantastic, uncrowded photo ops.
  5. Haengridan-gil: Stroll 5 minutes south. This is where the city feels young: indie cafes, vintage boutiques, dessert shops, and slow-roasted coffee. Pick a cafe with a window seat, order something cold, and rest your legs.
  6. Hwaseomun Gate: A 7-minute walk northwest takes you to Hwaseomun Gate. This is where the fortress walk officially begins. It is paired with Seobuk Gongsimdon, a striking brick watchtower that's one of the most-photographed spots in the entire fortress.
  7. Hwahongmun Gate. Walk 25 minutes northeast along the wall. You'll pass Janganmun (the grand North Gate) about halfway through - pause for photos. The wall crosses directly over the Suwoncheon stream via seven elegant stone arches, with the gorgeous Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion sitting right next to it.
  8. Descend at Changnyongmun (East Gate, 20-min walk): When you reach the grand East Gate, it is time to step off the wall and back down to ground level.
  9. Flying Suwon: A tethered helium balloon that lifts you about 150 meters into the sky for a 360-degree view of the entire fortress laid out below. Rides last around 15 minutes.
  10. Yeonmudae: Right next to the balloon launch is the Yeonmudae command post. For just a few thousand won, you can pick up a traditional Korean composite bow and shoot 10 arrows at the targets under the guidance of instructors.
Pro Tip

Treat the map above as your ultimate Suwon Walking Route - just follow it stop by stop. Got energy left? Cab 20 minutes to Starfield Library for the perfect finish.

Suwon Food Map: What to Eat & Where to Find It

Suwon Food Map
Suwon Food Map

In South Korea, Suwon is legendary for two completely opposite dining experiences: the luxurious, melt-in-your-mouth grilled beef ribs, and the ultra-casual, crispy fried chicken.

Instead of wandering around hoping to find a good spot, here is your curated Suwon food map for what to eat and exactly where to find it.

Suwon Wanggalbi (King-Sized Beef Ribs)

Suwon is essentially the barbecue capital of Korea. Suwon Wanggalbi-literally "King Galbi." The cuts here are noticeably larger, thicker, and meatier than anywhere else in the country. They are marinated in a surprisingly light, savory-sweet sauce and grilled over charcoal right at your table.

Where to Find It: You will find high-end galbi restaurants scattered all over the city, but famous, massive institutions like Bonsuwon Galbi or Kabojung are the heavy hitters that locals swear by.

Suwon Chicken Street (Cauldron-Fried Chicken)

Located just north of Paldalmun (the South Gate), this 100-meter alley is packed with restaurants that have been frying whole chickens since the 1970s.

The local secret? They fry the chicken in massive traditional cast-iron cauldrons, resulting in an unbelievable crunch that modern fryers just can't replicate.

Where to Find It: Walk down Suwon Chicken Street. You can't go wrong anywhere here, but Jinmi Tongdak and Yongseong Tongdak are the two undisputed local legends (expect a short line at both).

Paldalmun Market Snacks

If you just want to graze while you walk, head straight to the sprawling traditional markets surrounding the South Gate (which include Paldalmun Market, Nammun Market, and Ji-dong Market).

What to Eat: Grab a skewer of hot fish cakes, spicy stir-fried rice cakes (tteokbokki), sweet pancakes (hotteok), or try the local Sundae (Korean blood sausage) at Ji-dong Market if you are feeling adventurous.

Haengridan-gil (행리단길): Cafes & Modern Korean

The trendy street running along the western edge of Hwaseong Haenggung Palace is where young Suwon eats. Specialty coffee, brunch spots, dessert cafes, and small modern Korean restaurants in beautifully renovated old houses.

Coffee: look for Maison 1932 (in a restored 1930s building) and Daun Bakery for fresh pastries.

Suwon Subway & Metro Map: Lines, Stations & Getting Around

Suwon Subway Map - 3 Lines
Suwon Subway Map - 3 Lines

for a typical one-day fortress trip, you probably won't need the subway much at all - but having a clear, easy-to-read Suwon metro map in your pocket makes the whole city feel smaller and far less intimidating.

Three lines run through Suwon: Line 1 for quick connections to Seoul, the practical Suin-Bundang Line crossing east-west, and the sleek Sinbundang Line out to Gwanggyo.

The two stations that genuinely matter for travelers are Suwon Station (your KTX gateway and main transit hub) and Gwanggyo Jungang Station - the closest stop to the stunning Starfield Library.

Hwaseo Station is your shortcut if you'd rather start the fortress walk near Hwaseomun Gate. For everything else inside the fortress walls?

Suwon Station Map: How to Exit, Transfer & Reach the Fortress

Suwon Station Map
Suwon Station Map

Suwon Station can feel big at first because trains, subway lines, buses, taxis, and AK Plaza all meet in one busy complex. Use this Suwon Station Map!

Once you exit the turnstiles, just follow the signs for "Exit 4" or "Exit 5" on the east side of the station.

  • Exit 4 drops you right at the bus transit center for the fortress. Take Bus 13 or 11 to Paldal-gu Office · Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, then cross the road and walk about 6 minutes to the palace.
  • Exit 5 leads to the taxi stand. A taxi to Hwaseong Haenggung usually costs about US$6-8 (₩8,500-₩11,000) and takes around 5-10 minutes.
  • Exit 6 & 10 is for Paldalmun Gate. Take Bus 300 and get off at Paldalmun; the ride is about 10 minutes.

Seoul to Suwon Map: Train, Subway & Day Trip Routes

Frequently Asked Questions
Expand All
Can I use Google Maps to navigate the Suwon walking routes, or will it glitch? +
While Google recently gained approval to update its Korean mapping data in 2026, walking directions remain patchy and unreliable. Do not depend on it yet.

Download Naver Map or KakaoMap instead. Both have full English settings and provide flawless walking paths and transit routes.
Do I need to print these maps out? +
Do not rely on public Wi-Fi while hiking the 5.7-kilometer fortress loop. The central palace has hotspots, but the outer walls do not. You don't need to print physical maps, but you must rent an eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi for continuous digital map access.
Is Naver Map actually easy to use for English speakers? +
Yes. The app's interface and navigation are fully translated. While a few tiny local restaurants might require searching their Korean name, all major Suwon attractions, transport hubs, and street addresses are perfectly searchable in English.
Which map app is best for riding local Suwon buses? +
Naver Map is the undisputed champion here. It gives you down-to-the-minute arrival times, tells you exactly which station exit to use, and tracks the bus in real-time-features that western apps simply cannot match in South Korea.
Does Apple Maps work as a backup in Suwon? +
Yes, Apple Maps performs much better than Google for walking directions in Korea. However, it lacks deep local business information and accurate transit data. Use it as a backup for walking, but stick to Naver Map for finding restaurants and riding buses.
Should I use Naver Map or Kakao Map? +
Both work well. Naver Map is usually easier for international travelers because it supports more English search results. KakaoMap is also accurate, especially for local transit and walking routes. Download one before leaving Seoul.
What is the best map starting point for a first visit? +
Start from Paldalmun Gate if you want food and markets first. Start from Hwaseomun Gate if you want the prettiest wall walk. Start from Hwaseong Haenggung if you want the easiest central meeting point.

We (3 of us from Melbourne, Australia) had just completed a fabulous customised 21 day private tour in China with Asia Odyssey Travel in May 2025.The tour included Chongqing/Wulong, Yangtze River Cruise, Changsha, Fenghuang/Zhangjiajie and Guilin. We were provided with a 7 seater MPV, a driver and an English speaking tour guide in different destinations. Most hotel accommodations were great (we requested 4 star hotels) and tour guides and drivers were pleasant and very helpful. Transfer between destinations were seamless and trouble free. High lights included the beautiful night river cruise in Chongqing, Yangtze River Cruise, off shore tour to see the world famous Three Kingdom performance and the ship lift where the whole ship was lifted 100 m from one level of Yangtze river to the next at the Three Georges dam (an engineering marvel). Night view along the river in Fenghuang was spectacular. Sceneries in Zhangjiajie where Avatar movie was filmed, were breath taking. Li River cruise and Longji Rice Terrace in Guilin were awesome. Most of the credit for the success of this tour must go to the travel consultant Zeva who organised and coordinated the whole itinerary, including tickets for high speed trains for domestic travels. Zeva was super efficient, very responsive and helpful with our inquiries. Most importantly she understood the clients' requirements. She provided a detail itinerary, including hotels, before we left. She even kept in touch with us during our tour to ensure that we were been looked after. Well done Zeva. Asia Odyssey Travel should be proud of you!We are already looking forward to our next tour to Tibet, Chengdu and Jiuzhaigou. read more
